Jimmy and Sherri

Dad and Mom to Andrew and James

Born June 10, 2011, and passed the same day

Tucson, Arizona

We delivered our sons just over 22 weeks gestation. Andy’s heart stopped just prior to delivery. Fifteen minutes later, Jimmy was delivered and died several minutes after in our arms desperately trying to breathe on his own.

We delivered our sons at University of Arizona Medical Center. The hospital has a group called The Healing Hands. It’s comprised of the nurses and staff on Labor & Delivery. We’ve been actively volunteering with this group since our boys’ 1st birthday. Every year, The Healing Hands hold a remembrance ceremony specific for parents who suffer perinatal loss and loss shortly after birth. They’ve held this ceremony for several years now, on their own time and out of their own pocket. This year, they created an award for the member who shows extraordinary compassion and efforts to ease the ache and bridge a path to validating a grieving parent’s loss. Our story and recognition to this wonderful group was featured locally last week: http://www.kvoa.com/news/healing-hands-helps-parents-in-pain/.

Because we’ve shared our story in hopes of raising awareness and sparking volunteers to donate burial momentos, they’ve honored our sons by naming the award The James & Andrew Wakefield Memorial Award. A plaque donning our sons’ names and footprints will be displayed in the hospital and awarded each year from this year on. We will be guest speakers at this year’s ceremony and will be awarding Miss Savana Price with the first memorial award of our sons.
