Mom to Matthew Aaron

We had been trying for a baby for 3 years, and by some miracle, after giving up, we found out I was pregnant. Matthew was my second baby and my boyfriend’s first. We were so excited and happy, and so were all our friends.

As I got bigger and bigger, we called our little kicker “peanut”. At 21 weeks, I was to have a routine ultrasound to make sure everything was ok. As I am 38, they considered me high risk, but we had heard our baby’s heart beat the week before and were confident all was well. Then we got the devastating news: the heart was no longer beating. I just remember screaming, seeing my 12-year old son, Robert, crying and my boyfriend, AJ, looking like he had been punched in the heart.

They gave me the choice to deliver right away or wait until nature took its course. I decided to deliver right away…3 days later I gave birth to my angel, a darling little boy we named Matthew Aaron. He weighed 3 oz and was 6 inches long.. I got to cuddle him and have him baptized, and then kissed him and said goodbye. He took my heart with him that day. The following day, before I was discharged, the nurse snuck him into my room again in his little coffin so I could say goodbye. I cried at having to leave him there when I should have been taking him home.

It has been 4 weeks and 4 days since I met my angel, and I think of him every day. Love you, Mattie.
