Mom to Olivia May

May 5th, 2011 – September 20th, 2011

Wichita, Kansas

Olivia was born at 27 weeks due to a placental abruption. My water had unknowingly broke 2 weeks prior also. Since her birth was rushed there was no time for steroid shots to help her lungs so she was born very frail but filled with determination.

She spent 2 weeks on CPAP before having to move back to the ventilator. We were told it would only be for a week and before you knew it 4 months had passed. Olivia developed severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (formerly known as chronic lung disease) and the same machine that was keeping her alive was killing her. The hope was to regrow lung tissue before too much damage was done.

We were almost there after a tracheotomy and move to the PICU. Unfortunately, Olivia developed MRSA pneumonia. In a month she went from one foot out the hospital door to death’s doorstep. She fought so very hard to make it through the infection, but on September 20th, 2011 at 4:59 am Olivia passed away in my arms holding her daddy’s hand.
