Miscarried at 13.5 weeks gestation on January 13, 2015 & 4 weeks on June 1, 2015

No woman at 18 years of age should ever have to mumble the devastating words of “I lost my babies.” Those words should have never had to leave my mouth.  God, however, had other plans. That was my life, a good 6 months of it. This is my story of loss, of hope, and of courage.

I married my college sweetheart on May 26, 2007 after dating for 4 years.  He was the love of my life.  Everything seemed to work out perfectly as we met in our first class as college freshmen and married 2 weeks after graduation.  Life was easy and going exactly according to plan.  We decided in 2009 that we wanted to have children.  I figured it would take 2 months, 3 tops.  And then we could share the joy with our families that year at Thanksgiving.  And then at Christmas.  His birthday party?  Maybe 4th of July?  Football tailgate reunions??  And on it went.  No pregnancy, month after month.

Born and died July 16, 2013

Boston, Massachusetts

My husband and I found each other when we were both in our late 30’s. We were ready to be married and we were ready to be parents. In the next 14 months (after our honeymoon) when we weren’t yet pregnant, our excitement turned to surprise and then soon to worry. I changed my diet (I’m a registered dietitian so of course this would help, right?) to follow the “fertility diet plan”, reduced my work hours from full to part time, started acupuncture, reduced my caffeine, reduced my physical activity to keep my heart rate under 110… you name it and I did it. My husband too, though all of his tests were fine, started reading about increasing his testosterone with cold showers, more cholesterol from food, etc. Basically, we felt like we had nothing to lose and if there were a chance it could help, why not?

On May 28, 2011, my husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. On June 3rd, I noticed that I was 3 days late… and I’m NEVER late. I took a pregnancy test that afternoon and to my not-so-much surprise, it came back positive. My husband and I were both excited and nervous. We waited to tell our family until Father’s Day. We had made coffee cups for our fathers that said “To Be Grandpa, Feb. 2012.” My first doctor’s appointment was in the middle of July. We had an ultrasound done at our first appointment. I was around 10 weeks or so and to our astonishment, there were two little babies showing up on the monitor. My husband and I were floored! We went home and shared the news with our families and my side [of the family] reminded me that when I was little, I always said I was going to have twins.

At 20 weeks, December 22, 2012, I lost my twin boys. Two days prior to going into preterm labor, I noticed a nickel-sized discharge with a speck of pink in it. I called my doctor and he let me know that if I saw more blood throughout the day to go to L&D. I knew in my heart that something was not right. I went to L&D that day and was given a pelvic exam, set up on monitors and assured that nothing was wrong and was sent home. Less than 48 hours later, I woke up at 3:30 a.m. to severe lower back pain and 5 bowel movements in 2 hours. My husband and I rushed to the hospital. I noticed that my pain was every 1-2 minutes and that it was probably contractions.

Where do I start? So much emotion, anger, questions of “what ifs,” “whys,” etc. People will never understand the pain, sorrow and heartache that one feels losing both your babies. Not one, but TWO… a double blow!!! August 18, 2014 will be a permanent mark on our calender. This was the day we had to sadly deliver our twin prince and princess with no sign of life. For 4.5 years, we waited and prayed and this is what the end result was??? Why us and most, why me?

It has been over a year since we lost our twins [at time of writing] and honestly their story doesn’t get any easier to write.

My husband and I planned my pregnancy and were fortunate enough to get pregnant very quickly. I was over the moon excited, but nervous during the first trimester. Once I made it to thirteen weeks, I breathed a huge sigh of relief and started to plan our future with our baby. I had no idea that anything could happen beyond that point. Stillbirth was something that happened to people I didn’t know or at least rarely enough that it wouldn’t affect me.

September 1, 2011 – September 3, 2011

Zurich, Switzerland

After being unsuccessful at becoming pregnant naturally, we conceived in our first round of IVF, after implanting one egg, which subsequently split and graced us with expecting identical twin girls.

During our 19-week scan, we were told that one of our twins showed abnormalities in her kidneys. After our scan, the girls got fed up being called ‘twin 1’ and ‘twin 2’ and we chose Angel cards to give them names in utero. Since then, we referred to them as Passion and Hope – very synchronistic, as twin 2 chose Hope and she was the one dealing with her malformed kidneys.

The 2013 Holiday season was nothing like we were expecting and was not full of joy and happiness like it should be. It was the day before Thanksgiving and we had our routine ultra sound with the Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors. We were pregnant with identical twin boys and we got to see them every other week in an ultra sound. When we first found out we were having identical twins, we got referred to the MFM doctors to monitor my pregnancy for Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This is where a connection in the shared placenta is distributing nutrients unevenly and one baby gets bigger than the other one.  [Read more…]

Knowing I was pregnant was the scariest and happiest day of my life. It was even scarier telling my mother; she already knew, but was scared to ask me. One day she handed me a pregnancy test and told me to take it. I was so scared, but after taking the test, which you could hardly read what the results were, I told her I was already 3 months.  She was happy because she was not yet a grandmother.. I was frightened I’d be a mother at 18. [Read more…]

I felt like we had been awaiting these babies for over two years; with all the planning and hurdles we had to get through, this was finally going to be the big reward.  We were finally going to have these babies in our arms, only three or four more months to go. Then everything changed and we were in the battle to save our babies lives. We never thought this was the one battle we would lose. [Read more…]

Mom to Jacob, a twin

Died July 6, 2008 and born September 10, 2008

Tucson, Arizona

My journey started in February 2008. It never occurred to me that I would have anything other than an ideal, fairy tale pregnancy. I would have a healthy baby and it would all be so easy and magical…Wrong! I found out at 13 weeks that I was having twins. This possibility never entered my mind. I was terrified, and my husband was terrified. But we knew it would be ok. We started planning, we picked names: Baby A would be Jacob and Baby B would be Kaleb. I dreamed about their room, I ordered their bedding sets and I bought letters to paint and hang above their cribs. I was secretly afraid I would mix them up so I wanted their names above their cribs. I painted them myself and had so much fun. [Read more…]

Mom to Layla Angelina, stillborn April 11, 2007

Twin boys, lost April 22, 2005

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Growing up was very hard for me. At the age of 13, my mother gave birth to triplets. My sister was stillborn and my brother died within 24 hours of birth due to his lungs collapsing. My mother was addicted to drugs and gave me up for adoption. Luckily, I was adopted at 6 weeks old into a middle class family and I was the only child. Two days before my 12th birthday, my innocence was taken from me and 9 months later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who was named Brian Anthony. I wanted him to have a better life, so I gave him up for adoption. After that my life took a wrong turn. I started doing drugs and drinking, and I wasn’t on the right path to succeed. At 16 years old I got pregnant with a little girl and my boyfriend and I named her Layla Angelina. The moment I found out I was pregnant (at about 6 weeks) I got clean and sober and I haven’t touched drugs since (this November will be 6 years clean for me). [Read more…]

Baby B, lost April 2012 at 10 weeks,

 Jaxon Gray,
Born still on June 28, 2012 at 20 weeks

Dayton, Ohio

On March 27th, a week after our son turned 5, we found out we were expecting. We were so happy! We had been trying for 2 years. Our son had been asking for a sibling for awhile, so we were so happy that we could finally give him one! At 7 weeks we had an ultrasound to check for a healthy baby and get an exact due date since we had no idea when we conceived. Well, were we really surprised when we saw 2 little peanuts and 2 little fluttering hearts! Never did we ever expect to naturally get pregnant with twins! And identical twins at that! Baby B was a little smaller but looked good and had a strong heartbeat. I had never been so tired in my life; these little babies were taking everything from me! By 10 weeks I had lost almost 15 pounds! [Read more…]

Savannah Elizabeth, born and died February 26, 2012

Memphis, Tennessee

I found out I was pregnant on November 9, 2011, after our first attempt at IVF. We found out we were expecting twins on November 28. After almost two years of trying to get pregnant, we were so excited to be expecting two babies. At the first ultrasound it was found that I had a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) next to Baby A, but it was small enough to not be much of a concern. The day after I was released from my fertility doctor, I was in the ER for heavy bleeding. But, an ultrasound showed both babies were doing great. The bleeding was from my SCH. We ended up at the ER again a month later for more bleeding, but again both babies were fine. At that time I was ordered to bed rest for three weeks. After about 3.5 weeks the bleeding quit, for the first time my entire pregnancy (at almost 17 weeks pregnant). [Read more…]

Oak Island, North Carolina

After trying to conceive for 4 years my husband and I discovered we were pregnant with triplets in September.  We were happy but overwhelmed; at 7 weeks we met with the maternal fetal specialist who explained the risks and options.  She sent us to Duke to meet with another specialist who did genetic testing and advised us to reduce to twins.  It was a very hard decision but we felt that it would give the other two the best chance.  It was a horrible procedure to go through, and in hindsight I don’t know that I would do it again, but at the time I thought I was increasing my babies’ odds…It was so strange to grieve one and yet be excited for two. Liam James born and passed away on November 18, 2011 at 22w5d

 Miamisburg, OH

After two and a half years of infertility and three cycles of Clomid/Ovidrel/IUI, my husband and I were overjoyed to find out we were expecting and were due in March 2012. At seven weeks, we found out we were expecting twins! Through the shock, we were beyond thrilled.

My pregnancy was incredibly uneventful until I got to 19 weeks. I noticed some dark brown spotting and went to the doctor. He couldn’t find a reason for the bleeding, so I was sent to my high risk doctor the next day for an ultrasound. When I had that done, we found out that we were definitely having a boy and a girl! I also learned that my cervix was measuring at 3.5 centimeters. The ultrasound tech and the doctor assured me that was a good measurement and there was no apparent cause for my bleeding. I was sent home with the instructions to take it easy for the rest of the weekend.

My anatomy scan was scheduled for the following Tuesday. By that time, the bleeding had stopped and I was feeling great. The ultrasound showed everything was as it was the previous week. My cervix was still measuring fine (though I didn’t get an exact measurement), and the babies were healthy and active. Since everything was looking good, my husband and I finally decided to create our registry (I had been putting it off because I was so paranoid something would go wrong). We had a blast going through the baby aisles of Target, daydreaming about using all this stuff with our son and daughter. About halfway through the registry, I started to feel some gas pain and pressure. I just assumed it was the typical pregnancy constipation. By the time we got home, the pressure was pretty intense, so I laid in bed the rest of the evening, drank water, and watched television. I kept going to the bathroom to try to relieve the pressure, but it didn’t really help. I eventually decided to go to bed early and hope that I felt better in the morning. When I went to the bathroom one last time before turning in, there was bright red blood on the toilet paper. I knew something was seriously wrong and rushed to the hospital.

I had only been dating my boyfriend for 5 months when I discovered I was pregnant. It was a huge shock as I was only 17 and I had never really thought I wanted to be a mum; I was just happy being an aunty to my beautiful nieces. When I told Bryan I was pregnant he was soooo excited! He wanted the whole world to know he was going to be a daddy, but I made him promise we wouldn’t tell anyone until we were over 12 weeks and passed miscarriage stage. Of course, we had to tell our parents, though. I was terrified to tell my mum as I thought she was going to be so disappointed, but to my surprise she was thrilled to have another grandchild on the way. [Read more…]
