The 2013 Holiday season was nothing like we were expecting and was not full of joy and happiness like it should be. It was the day before Thanksgiving and we had our routine ultra sound with the Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors. We were pregnant with identical twin boys and we got to see them every other week in an ultra sound. When we first found out we were having identical twins, we got referred to the MFM doctors to monitor my pregnancy for Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This is where a connection in the shared placenta is distributing nutrients unevenly and one baby gets bigger than the other one.  [Read more...]

Knowing I was pregnant was the scariest and happiest day of my life. It was even scarier telling my mother; she already knew, but was scared to ask me. One day she handed me a pregnancy test and told me to take it. I was so scared, but after taking the test, which you could hardly read what the results were, I told her I was already 3 months.  She was happy because she was not yet a grandmother.. I was frightened I’d be a mother at 18. [Read more...]

I felt like we had been awaiting these babies for over two years; with all the planning and hurdles we had to get through, this was finally going to be the big reward.  We were finally going to have these babies in our arms, only three or four more months to go. Then everything changed and we were in the battle to save our babies lives. We never thought this was the one battle we would lose. [Read more...]

Mom to Jacob, a twin

Died July 6, 2008 and born September 10, 2008

My journey started in February 2008. It never occurred to me that I would have anything other than an ideal, fairy tale pregnancy. I would have a healthy baby and it would all be so easy and magical…Wrong! I found out at 13 weeks that I was having twins. This possibility never entered my mind. I was terrified, and my husband was terrified. But we knew it would be ok. We started planning, we picked names: Baby A would be Jacob and Baby B would be Kaleb. I dreamed about their room, I ordered their bedding sets and I bought letters to paint and hang above their cribs. I was secretly afraid I would mix them up so I wanted their names above their cribs. I painted them myself and had so much fun. [Read more...]

Twin boys, lost April 22, 2005

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Growing up was very hard for me. At the age of 13, my mother gave birth to triplets. My sister was stillborn and my brother died within 24 hours of birth due to his lungs collapsing. My mother was addicted to drugs and gave me up for adoption. Luckily, I was adopted at 6 weeks old into a middle class family and I was the only child. Two days before my 12th birthday, my innocence was taken from me and 9 months later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who was named Brian Anthony. I wanted him to have a better life, so I gave him up for adoption. After that my life took a wrong turn. I started doing drugs and drinking, and I wasn’t on the right path to succeed. At 16 years old I got pregnant with a little girl and my boyfriend and I named her Layla Angelina. The moment I found out I was pregnant (at about 6 weeks) I got clean and sober and I haven’t touched drugs since (this November will be 6 years clean for me). [Read more...]

On March 27th, a week after our son turned 5, we found out we were expecting. We were so happy! We had been trying for 2 years. Our son had been asking for a sibling for awhile, so we were so happy that we could finally give him one! At 7 weeks we had an ultrasound to check for a healthy baby and get an exact due date since we had no idea when we conceived. Well, were we really surprised when we saw 2 little peanuts and 2 little fluttering hearts! Never did we ever expect to naturally get pregnant with twins! And identical twins at that! Baby B was a little smaller but looked good and had a strong heartbeat. I had never been so tired in my life; these little babies were taking everything from me! By 10 weeks I had lost almost 15 pounds! [Read more...]

I found out I was pregnant on November 9, 2011, after our first attempt at IVF. We found out we were expecting twins on November 28. After almost two years of trying to get pregnant, we were so excited to be expecting two babies. At the first ultrasound it was found that I had a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) next to Baby A, but it was small enough to not be much of a concern. The day after I was released from my fertility doctor, I was in the ER for heavy bleeding. But, an ultrasound showed both babies were doing great. The bleeding was from my SCH. We ended up at the ER again a month later for more bleeding, but again both babies were fine. At that time I was ordered to bed rest for three weeks. After about 3.5 weeks the bleeding quit, for the first time my entire pregnancy (at almost 17 weeks pregnant). [Read more...]

After trying to conceive for 4 years my husband and I discovered we were pregnant with triplets in September.  We were happy but overwhelmed; at 7 weeks we met with the maternal fetal specialist who explained the risks and options.  She sent us to Duke to meet with another specialist who did genetic testing and advised us to reduce to twins.  It was a very hard decision but we felt that it would give the other two the best chance.  It was a horrible procedure to go through, and in hindsight I don’t know that I would do it again, but at the time I thought I was increasing my babies’ odds…It was so strange to grieve one and yet be excited for two. After two and a half years of infertility and three cycles of Clomid/Ovidrel/IUI, my husband and I were overjoyed to find out we were expecting and were due in March 2012. At seven weeks, we found out we were expecting twins! Through the shock, we were beyond thrilled.

My pregnancy was incredibly uneventful until I got to 19 weeks. I noticed some dark brown spotting and went to the doctor. He couldn’t find a reason for the bleeding, so I was sent to my high risk doctor the next day for an ultrasound. When I had that done, we found out that we were definitely having a boy and a girl! I also learned that my cervix was measuring at 3.5 centimeters. The ultrasound tech and the doctor assured me that was a good measurement and there was no apparent cause for my bleeding. I was sent home with the instructions to take it easy for the rest of the weekend.

My anatomy scan was scheduled for the following Tuesday. By that time, the bleeding had stopped and I was feeling great. The ultrasound showed everything was as it was the previous week. My cervix was still measuring fine (though I didn’t get an exact measurement), and the babies were healthy and active. Since everything was looking good, my husband and I finally decided to create our registry (I had been putting it off because I was so paranoid something would go wrong). We had a blast going through the baby aisles of Target, daydreaming about using all this stuff with our son and daughter. About halfway through the registry, I started to feel some gas pain and pressure. I just assumed it was the typical pregnancy constipation. By the time we got home, the pressure was pretty intense, so I laid in bed the rest of the evening, drank water, and watched television. I kept going to the bathroom to try to relieve the pressure, but it didn’t really help. I eventually decided to go to bed early and hope that I felt better in the morning. When I went to the bathroom one last time before turning in, there was bright red blood on the toilet paper. I knew something was seriously wrong and rushed to the hospital.

I had only been dating my boyfriend for 5 months when I discovered I was pregnant. It was a huge shock as I was only 17 and I had never really thought I wanted to be a mum; I was just happy being an aunty to my beautiful nieces. When I told Bryan I was pregnant he was soooo excited! He wanted the whole world to know he was going to be a daddy, but I made him promise we wouldn’t tell anyone until we were over 12 weeks and passed miscarriage stage. Of course, we had to tell our parents, though. I was terrified to tell my mum as I thought she was going to be so disappointed, but to my surprise she was thrilled to have another grandchild on the way. [Read more...]

In 2007 I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant. It definitely wasn’t planned, but I was immediately very excited from the time I saw those two pink lines! I was on cloud 9 because all I ever wanted was to be a mommy. My boyfriend at the time was living out of town so he decided he would move to where I live and we would get an apartment and start our little family. We started thinking of names for our baby. My boyfriend thought of Doroteo for a little boy, named after his grandfather, who was his main father figure and who he actually called dad rather than grandpa. I agreed that if we have a boy he would be named Doroteo and I decided I liked Imalda for a girl. I started being very cautious of everything I ate, drank, I didn’t lift heavy things, I took my prenatal vitamins every day. I made sure to take care of my baby so I could have a healthy little boy or girl. [Read more...]

It was a very important day; I was 19 weeks pregnant, and on our way to find out if we were having a boy or girl. I knew that there was a little girl in there, but what I didn’t know, or even could imagine, was that there were two of them! Picture my hands on my face, and dad’s head to the wall, and big brother’s jaw on the floor. ”Its twins!” they said. Boy or girl, we didn’t know, “They’re lying on top of each other,” is what the lady said. [Read more...]

My name is Katlyn Hudgins and I married my wonderful husband Andrew February 6, 2010. We knew we wanted a big family with lots of children and most of them adopted. We only planned to have one, maybe two biological children and adopt at least two or three. We wanted to try to start having kids winter of 2011 but to our wonderful and excited surprise we found ourselves pregnant in April of 2011. It was earlier than we planned but we didn’t care, we were over the moon. Things were stressful because we were still both uni students and worked full time but we knew God gave us this baby for a reason. Just a few short weeks later I had some spotting. I knew that little spotting was normal but it was so painful I nearly collapsed on the floor at work. Being blessed that I worked in the same office as my mom I called her on my cell phone and without a word she knew I needed her. She helped me into her classroom and called my doctor for me while I called my husband. The doctor said to go straight to the ER because of the pain. The pain was very sharp and this worried them thinking it may have been ectopic. [Read more...]

March 9, 2011 was one of the happiest days of my life.  After eight months of being off of the pill, I had a positive pregnancy test.  Later I found out I was exactly five weeks on that day.  This was the first pregnancy for my husband and I.  We were not really trying, but we were not preventing… we were just going with the flow. We were so excited to begin this new chapter in our lives.  I consulted my OBGYN the following week to confirm my pregnancy and schedule my first appointment.  We couldn’t wait.  At ten weeks we went for our first visit and ultrasound.  To everyone’s surprise, we saw not one, but two little peanuts on the screen.  We couldn’t believe it, and neither could our family.  We were totally beside ourselves with joy.  Two tiny miracles, on our first pregnancy, and without fertility help. Missed Miscarriage – November 2009

and Chemical Pregnancy – July 2011

Colorado Springs, Colorado

In identical multiple pregnancies, there is one placenta and multiple umbilical cords. Each cord holds either two or three blood vessels, and carries blood and nutrients to each baby.

In Twin to Twin Transfusion, one baby (the recipient) has one of the other baby’s (the donor) blood vessels in their umbilical cord. This can also be caused by the babies sharing unequal parts of the placenta. Because of the unequal sharing of nutrients, the donor baby grows rapidly faster than the donor, and a size difference is usually the first indication that TTTS is taking place.  [Read more...]
