I was absolutely ecstatic and shocked beyond belief when I found out I was pregnant with Silas. I think it took me 6 pregnancy tests over the course of a weekend to really believe I was finally being blessed with a child at 32 years of age. I had tried to conceive naturally for almost two years and I think I had just given up hope that it was ever going to happen. Needless to say, I was very involved with my prenatal visits and constantly read up on everything I could be expecting and what I should do to ensure a healthy pregnancy.  I don’t think I ever prayed so much in my whole life! But as I got bigger, my pregnancy started to cause me concern. I had a lot of unexplained shooting pains when I would stand up or sneeze, and I sneeze a lot when I’m pregnant! The doctors always reassured me everything was normal and I got extra ultrasounds and examinations to ensure this. By the time Silas was born at 18 1/2 weeks, I think I already had 4 pictures of him proudly displayed around the house and near my bed! [Read more…]

Time to Tell Their Story (written February 3, 2012)

I have never written about the details of losing Evie, Jack, & Will. It’s been over two years now since we lost the pregnancy and tonight is the first night that I’ve actually felt like I could write about how they were born.  I don’t know how this is going to go, but I feel ready to give it a try.  I am going to ask for patience, please, as I search for the words to tell this story.

It started the night of December 2nd, 2009.  It was a Wednesday. [Read more…]

Stillborn at 16 weeks on December 6, 2009.

Whenever I thought about having children, I never imagined anything bad, scary, traumatic. You see so many women have normal, healthy pregnancies where nothing ever goes wrong and it just never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be one of those “normal” women. Never in one million years would I have imagined that I would be where I am today.

I remember finding out I was pregnant for the first time like it was yesterday. I was 20 years old and had been married to my husband for almost one year. My hand was shaking so hard I could barely show him the test results. I was nervous, excited, scared…so many different emotions all at the same time. I had my first ultrasound when I was 9 weeks pregnant. I cried as soon as I saw my little baby and heard his heart beat. It was such an amazing thing to me to see this life that I had created. That moment was something I could never really find the words to explain. [Read more…]

I was 26 weeks and 4 days pregnant with my first child. My husband, Aaron, had been out of town for a National Sales Convention for work. I went to Dr. Bruhn on Tuesday, January 24 for my scheduled appointment. This was the only appointment that Aaron had not been able to make so Sarah, my twin sister, went with me. At this appointment I had to do the whole glucose tolerance test thing and I was thrilled when the nurse told me that my blood sugar levels and hemoglobin were both perfect. Dr. Bruhn got out her hand-held Doppler and listened to Jonah’s heart beat at 150 beats per minute. She assured me that everything looked great and she would see me back in four weeks. [Read more…]

Heather

Mom to Everett

Born sleeping February 10, 2012

Wakefield, Rhode Island

Before his delivery date, my son had everything he could possibly need. We made sure he was registered for the car seat with the highest safety ratings.  We chose organic cotton onesies that were softest to the touch.  We even had the warming machine for the wet wipes.  Sisters were knitting hats, friends were making quilts, and grandmothers were already decorating the nursery in their mind’s eye.  Finally, he had a name.  Believe it or not, it came to me in a dream.  Maybe he told me himself – his name was to be Everett. Mom to Ryan Alan – December 7, 2011

Andrew Jonathan – December 8, 2011

Oak Island, North Carolina

After trying to conceive for 4 years my husband and I discovered we were pregnant with triplets in September.  We were happy but overwhelmed; at 7 weeks we met with the maternal fetal specialist who explained the risks and options.  She sent us to Duke to meet with another specialist who did genetic testing and advised us to reduce to twins.  It was a very hard decision but we felt that it would give the other two the best chance.  It was a horrible procedure to go through, and in hindsight I don’t know that I would do it again, but at the time I thought I was increasing my babies’ odds…It was so strange to grieve one and yet be excited for two. Brady Winston Butler: November 6, 2007–March 29, 2008

Nashville, Tennessee

I was told from the time I was a teenager with irregular periods that I may need some help getting pregnant in the future.  I got married when I was 25 and from the first day of our marriage we never did anything to prevent pregnancy as I knew it might take a while.  After a couple of years and several unsuccessful rounds of Clomid, I was sent to a fertility doctor to take more drastic steps. I was diagnosed with PCOS and needed fertility meds to help me ovulate. The first fertility doctor I went to told me that I needed to do invitro fertilization. We did and I did not get pregnant and ended up in the hospital for hyperstimulation.  It was a horrible experience and the doctor was just awful to me. I finally went to another fertility doctor when I was 28 and he told me that he thought IUI and fertility injections would work just fine for me. So we tried IUI with the lowest dose of the meds available and I got pregnant on the first try. However, once I finally got pregnant —-I got really pregnant! My first ultrasound revealed that I was pregnant with triplets. We were so happy, excited, and scared all at the same time. I was sent to a high risk pregnancy doctor and our journey began. (Her due date was May 4, 2011)

Middleburg, Florida

It was a very important day; I was 19 weeks pregnant, and on our way to find out if we were having a boy or girl. I knew that there was a little girl in there, but what I didn’t know, or even could imagine, was that there were two of them! Picture my hands on my face, and dad’s head to the wall, and big brother’s jaw on the floor. ”Its twins!” they said. Boy or girl, we didn’t know, “They’re lying on top of each other,” is what the lady said. [Read more…]

My story

I had a feeling that I wasn’t able to get pregnant, but then again in the past, I never intentionally tried to. I was busy finishing my school, my goals and my fun that I still wanted to have.

I was in Oklahoma City visiting my mother for the Christmas holiday last year and I have this memory of a conversation that we had about babies. “Are you going to ever have kids?” “Are you ok if you don’t?” My mom asked. [Read more…]

Forever in our hearts

Portland, Oregon

It was early October of 2010 when my boyfriend and I found out I was pregnant. We had so many different emotions that day. We had just moved to a new state and were staying with family until we were able to get on our feet. So finding out we were having a baby was a lot to put on us at that time, but of course the feelings of “what are we going to do” went away and on came the pure excitement. We told everyone in the family and they were all supportive. This being my first pregnancy I was very nervous but anxious at the same time. [Read more…]

Stephine

Mom to Silas Hunter

July 23, 2011 – August 1, 2011

Newark, Ohio

I started having Braxton Hicks at around 19 weeks. Nothing to be worried about, except once after we moved. I was having them for a good 45 minutes about every 4-5 minutes. I called my doctor and we stopped them. About 2 weeks later (maybe sooner, it’s all been a rush), I woke up about 6:15am with Braxton Hicks…the ones I had gone to bed with.  But then I started getting pains..”Oh crap, I’m constipated.” These pains, oh my goodness, they kept getting worse. I went downstairs and tried to walk around, drink water, and I laid down. Boyfriend was upstairs in bed still, it was a Saturday. About 11 or so, I woke him up because I couldn’t take it anymore. I called Labor & Delivery and they told me to get some Milk of Magnesia. My boyfriend ran to the store and got it, came back a half hour or so later, but it wasn’t working and the pain was getting worse. [Read more…]

Mom to Deron Mekhi Rountree

Born Born June 11th, 2011 at 10:43pm

Died June 12th, 2011 at 12:08am

Chesapeake, Virginia

On February 14, 2011 I had my first OB/GYN visit to determine if I was pregnant.  I found out I was 6 wks pregnant.  I was told my uterus was bigger then it should be and found out my fibroids had returned.  I didn’t know how to feel at that time cause I never thought I could get pregnant again.  I had  a miscarriage in 2003 due to fibroids and other problems and the Dr told me I wouldn’t be able to have anymore kids. I also wasn’t sure how the father would take it cause when I told him I thought I may be pregnant the first thing he said was we needed to get rid of it. So all of those things consumed my thoughts and I didn’t have time to have joy of being pregnant.  My Dr set an appointment for 2/25/11 for a sonogram to see where the fibroids are and if they would effect my pregnancy.  I went home and had so much to think about, but in the end I decided to keep my baby and go through with the pregnancy. I was 15 when I found out I was pregnant for the first time. I didn’t believe it when my doctor told me, I even  told her it was impossible.  I had suffered ovarian cysts for some time and I honestly didn’t think I would ever be able to conceive.  I was also bleeding while my Dr told me from what I believed to be my period. My Dr ordered another urine sample pregnancy test and it came back positive again.  My boyfriend was 21, we were scared. My Dr gave me the advice to have an abortion and I refused. I went home and took it easy waiting for the bleeding to stop. The bleeding would calm when I was laying  down but once I sat up I would bleed again. At 10 weeks I had a huge bleeding spell and went to the ER. I had a very hard time getting the staff to stop suggesting a D&C. I had an ultrasound that showed I had a very tilted uterus and surprise I had TWINS. Shock set it very quickly. I had always dreamed of having twins but how on earth could I have two babies at my age?
