We had given up; all the tests at the fertility clinic showed the only thing preventing us from getting pregnant was my PCOS and that I’d have to lose some weight and keep track of ovulation and it would happen. That was in January 2011; by summer we had decided that we would focus on us, and if a baby was in our cards then it would happen. It was too stressful to go 5 times a week, sometimes an hour away, to have the ultrasounds for ovulation, and expensive! June passed and we had great fun going to the beach, July passed and we drank beers at the local amusement park and rode roller coasters ‘til they closed, August passed and we were looking forward to getting ready for our favorite holiday- Halloween. I missed a period but that was nothing unusual because of my PCOS, so I didn’t think anything of it, I had no morning sickness and I was actually losing weight. September is here and fall is starting to creep in, another month with no period and I felt fine but I decided to test one day just for the heck of it- I peed on the stick and went about my housecleaning and came back 5 minutes later…POSITIVE! After discovering I am resistant to oral fertility medications and one failed round of intra-uterine insemination, we decided to take a break from fertility treatments. I’ve been wanting to write this for a while now, but it never seemed to be the “right” time.  I have kept that night close to my heart but have managed to get a lot of the details out of order and confused in my head.  My mom was thoughtful enough to take photos immediately following Caleb’s birth.  It must have taken an incredible amount of strength to do what she did; looking at the photos I know it must have been difficult to hold the camera steady to capture those precious moments.  I will forever be grateful to her.  These photos tell a story that although I was present for physically, my heart was trying so hard to be somewhere else, where Caleb’s heart was still beating and where Caleb would hear our voices as we told him how much we love him… [Read more...]

After suffering with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) since I was 17 years old, I thought I would have a battle on my hands to ever have a baby. My husband and I were quite philosophical about falling pregnant: “it’ll happen when it happens”.  It did happen; completely unexpectedly and without real effort.  My pregnancy was without any major issues. I had slightly more checks than average due to my raised BMI (thanks to the PCOS).  I was sick throughout, but it was manageable.  I had raised levels of amniotic fluid seen on scans at 28 and 36 weeks (but not at 32 weeks strangely). I was told by the Doctor at 36 weeks this wasn’t an issue as he was in the head-down position.  For nine months, I had this constant feeling that it was all too good to be true.  And it was. I should begin by telling you, admittedly, that up until this point in my life, I was a pretty lucky girl.

I came from a happy, nuclear family. I always had a small circle of great friends. I was fortunate to attend college, graduate in four (largely) uneventful years, and immediately find a teaching job while some of my peers were scrambling. I met my soul mate in college (although we knew one another in high school, but we hated each other then–another story for another blog post) and we had a nice, June wedding. During this time, I had misfortune in only one area–my health. Being overweight had been an attribute of mine for as long as I could remember. I went on diet after diet, but I would always lose a few pounds and then simply give up. I made excuses such as “It’s too close to the holidays”, or “I’m just too busy right now,” but the simple fact of the matter was that I simply lacked the desire to do it. It just wasn’t there. I knew at a young age that I would not have children and those fears were confirmed in the fall of 2008. I was in and out of the hospital several times for abdominal pain and the doctors couldn’t figure out the reason for it. It was a couple of weeks after the pain started when I was diagnosed with insulin resistant Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The doctor told me my chances of getting pregnant were slim to none. At nineteen years old I was diagnosed with PCOS. I was told many different things from many different doctors, ranging from, “You will never be able to have children,” to “The only way I tell someone they will never have children is if they do not have a uterus.” December 25, 2007, at the age of 33, I found out I was pregnant (exactly 17 weeks 4 days…yes I missed my entire first trimester!). I had defied the odds that were against me…this was a miracle!! At this point I was single, finishing grad school and a full time teacher. I was told from the time I was a teenager with irregular periods that I may need some help getting pregnant in the future.  I got married when I was 25 and from the first day of our marriage we never did anything to prevent pregnancy as I knew it might take a while.  After a couple of years and several unsuccessful rounds of Clomid, I was sent to a fertility doctor to take more drastic steps. I was diagnosed with PCOS and needed fertility meds to help me ovulate. The first fertility doctor I went to told me that I needed to do invitro fertilization. We did and I did not get pregnant and ended up in the hospital for hyperstimulation.  It was a horrible experience and the doctor was just awful to me. I finally went to another fertility doctor when I was 28 and he told me that he thought IUI and fertility injections would work just fine for me. So we tried IUI with the lowest dose of the meds available and I got pregnant on the first try. However, once I finally got pregnant —-I got really pregnant! My first ultrasound revealed that I was pregnant with triplets. We were so happy, excited, and scared all at the same time. I was sent to a high risk pregnancy doctor and our journey began. I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I also knew the journey would be a difficult one. For as long as I can remember I was told I would need help in becoming a mother. I have P.O.S. Poly cystic ovary syndrome. So you could imagine my shock when my boyfriend Scott and I found out we were pregnant.  I remember almost being in denial about the whole thing. On January 28,2011 we had our first ultrasound, everything looked great. We were told we should see an Internal Fetal Medicine Specialist due to my P.O.S.  We had ultrasounds every 3 weeks. I loved watching my baby grow and move around like crazy! Everything was going great, I had no morning sickness, no pains of any kind just the occasional heartburn. We were both completely healthy.

My husband and I decided to start a family about six months after we were married in September of 1999. After a year of trying we made an appointment and did the whole fertility workup, but the doctor couldn’t find any reason why we weren’t conceiving. Another year went by with no luck and we were at the point of pursuing further testing.
On July 26th, 2002 I decided to take a pregnancy test because I was feeling kind of “off” and was about four days late. To my shock, there were two lines almost immediately. My husband was visiting a friend and I called him to come home. When he got there I handed him a little picture frame I’d bought that said I <3 my Daddy, with a printout in the picture spot that looked like construction tape and the words: Under construction, estimated completion 4/1/03. It took him a few seconds to process what I was telling him but he was absolutely ecstatic.
We knew we should wait but within 24 hours we had told everyone we knew that we were finally going to have a baby. The next several days were absolutely wonderful. We had picked names at least a year before and immediately started making plans for our baby. My health insurance provided free car seats to new moms so I called to find out what kind of seat they offered (I was already a little bit of a car seat nerd) and left a voice mail when nobody answered.

When I was nineteen years old I was told that I could not have children. 
 
My family doctor believed that Ii had PCOS. She then sent me to an OBGYN to have him make sure that my ovaries were alright. The first appointment with him, he did not run a pregnancy test on me. He prescribed me the nuva ring and Prozac for the pain. I was glad to take the prescriptions thinking they were going to help. The following month I went back to his office. When the nurse asked how I had been I told her my body was acting weird. I had a stomach virus for over eight days when my sister and room mate had only had it two days. I was also running a fever of 102.00 for most of the eight days. Tthe nurse then told me she would run a pregnancy test and I told her “it will be negative, I can’t get pregnant!” The nurse did not return to my room, however the doctor did. He then told me that I was over three months pregnant. I told him that could not be so he did an ultrasound to prove me wrong.

My husband and I got married in June of 2008, in July of 2008 I was referred to a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) because after a year off birth control I had only had two cycles. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was told I do not ovulate on my own. I was put on Clomid. I took it for two months, never having more than one follicle but at least that one was big enough I could take the trigger shot to ovulate. Both cycles failed. My third cycle on clomid when I went in for my follicle check my follicle was not big enough. They had me come in a few days later, and it still was too small for the trigger shot. So I decided to take a small break for a month or two. About three weeks after my follicle check I took a test one morning because I hadn’t been feeling well and sure enough I was pregnant. We were over joyed and told everyone right away.
