Mom to four babies

Noah
Born still August 17, 2011

Baby #1 – lost February 2010

Baby #2 – lost September 2010

and

Baby #4 – lost July 2012

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

My husband and I got married in July 2008 and didn’t think we were quite ready yet to start trying for kids. We started trying to conceive and got frustrated because we were not getting pregnant right away. I bought an ovulation kit and the 2nd time I used it, we were pregnant in December 2009. We were so excited to see that little word on the stick: “pregnant”. At 11 weeks into the pregnancy, I began to have some spotting and went to my doctor. I was sent for blood tests on 3 days and they determined that I was losing the baby. I decided to have a D&C because I didn’t think I could emotionally handle miscarrying naturally. After the D&C we found out our little one only grew to about 7-8 weeks. The doctor just told us to keep trying and that miscarriages happened more often than we thought. [Read more…]

This month marks the one year anniversary of the worst day of my life, the day my husband and I became a statistic in a taboo tragedy. The events of the last year have been kept bottled up until now. I’m ready to share the secrets we have been burdened with following the losses of our first three children. [Read more…]

Mom to Baby A,
Lost April 10, 2009 at 5 weeks

and

Baby M,
Lost April 26, 2010 at 8 weeks

I’ve always wanted to be a mom, but circumstances in my life had always seemed to conspire against it.  So when I had a positive pregnancy test just three weeks before my 40th birthday, I felt overjoyed and blessed.  The doctors estimated that I only five weeks along and had only known about my pregnancy for a short time, but just knowing I was pregnant flooded my heart will a profound love. I never felt calmer and more peaceful in my life. The feeling of that first pregnancy was magical. [Read more…]

Mom to Poppy Kate
Born still December 15, 2011,

Five tiny angels, each lost at 5 weeks
April 2009, April 2010 and November 2010,

and

Heterotopic twins (one ectopic, one uterine)
Lost at 6 weeks and 11 weeks in January 2011

Melbourne, Australia

From Rebecca’s blog post: 2011…the year that, well, sucked:

It seems as though the best place to start is to get all of the terrible, awful stuff that happened last year out on the table, so you know what you’re getting into.  It gives you some perspective as to where I’m coming from.  Don’t get me wrong, my life is definitely not crap.  I have a wonderful husband, let’s call him G, and he’s my soul mate and my strength.  Not to mention the love of my life :). We have a little boy, Xavier, who is known by many nicknames, including ‘X’, ‘Xav’, ‘Xavi’ and ‘Trouble’.  He took a bit of work to get, 2 years of TTC and 6 months of the fertility drug, Clomid, before we fell pregnant with him.  Xavier is now 5, and about to start school.  We have a great extended family; G’s parents and my dad and his partner all live nearby, along with a couple of our siblings.  Everyone else lives near enough that we see them often and we have an array of nieces and nephews (even a grand niece!) who Xav loves playing with.  We have great friends and workmates, who are a big support to us and lots of fun to hang out with! Baby # 3, lost at 4 weeks on May 16, 2011,

Baby #4, lost at 7 weeks on November 21,  2011, and

Baby #5, lost at 6 weeks on February 25, 2012

Fort Worth, Texas

If you would have asked me when I was 20 where I would be in 5 years, the answer would have come out loud and clear: having babies.  There was never a doubt in my mind that my purpose in life was to become a mom and when I met my husband, Gabriel, when I was 24, I knew that that purpose was going to be fulfilled.  I loved my life; I was living in Hawaii, working at Tripler Army Medical Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I had been in the Army for 6 years, and had found exactly who I was.  Meeting Gabe was like the icing on the cake. Once we started dating, we knew that we wanted to have children, which was on the table even before getting married was. Luckily for us, 8 months later we found out we were pregnant.  I was back in Texas when I found out the news. I called Gabe, who was still in Hawaii, and told him, “You are going to be a daddy!”  We were both so incredibly excited!  We were getting married in just over a month, so it was perfect.  I couldn’t believe what the doctor was telling me, so I went home and took at least 10-15more pregnancy tests; all of them were a clear positive! Life was good. We immediately told everyone, Facebook and all.  I would sit there drawing hearts on my tummy, with a smile on my face.  Each week I would write a quick update on what went on that week and how I was feeling; all the excitement that was building. Mom to Faith Elizabeth and Grace Katherine
Stillborn November 3, 1996 at 26 weeks’ gestation

and

Thomas Patrick
Born and died July 14, 1998

Ohio

Tim and I were married in March of 1994. We had a son, Timothy. Two years into our marriage, I was expecting again…and there were many surprises…First of all, everything was different with this pregnancy…there was more fatigue, more nausea, more belly, and more “stretching pains”. At our first ultrasound appointment around 6-8 weeks, the doctor confirmed, after a series of disconcerting “Hmmmms…” that we were expecting TWINS. I had a slight panic attack on the table, immediately overwhelmed with all the additional concerns and possible complications that could come with a twin pregnancy. Tim’s twenty-year-old face was covered in shock, bewilderment, and stunned excitement. I staggered my way off the examining table, and once safely behind the curtain, I began to change out of the napkin gown we ladies wear at the OB, and the fears started to emerge in the form of tears, which gave way to sobs. My story begins in 2005 at the ripe young age of sixteen. I met a boy who I thought I was going to be with forever. Born into Heaven February 2012

Bowling Green, Kentucky

When I had my third child, I had only been not-pregnant for 16 months before getting pregnant with her. Unfortunately, in our humanness, we are broken people, and I was pretty resistant to having a baby so soon after having my second child. Her pregnancy was not a pleasant one, and neither was my attitude towards it. When she arrived though, and spent 7 days in the NICU, my attitude changed drastically. This sets the premise for the story of my first miscarriage. [Read more…]

Carissa
Angel #1 lost at six weeks on October 23rd, 2011
Angel #2 lost at six weeks and four days on February 11th, 2012

I should begin by telling you, admittedly, that up until this point in my life, I was a pretty lucky girl.

I came from a happy, nuclear family. I always had a small circle of great friends. I was fortunate to attend college, graduate in four (largely) uneventful years, and immediately find a teaching job while some of my peers were scrambling. I met my soul mate in college (although we knew one another in high school, but we hated each other then–another story for another blog post) and we had a nice, June wedding. During this time, I had misfortune in only one area–my health. Being overweight had been an attribute of mine for as long as I could remember. I went on diet after diet, but I would always lose a few pounds and then simply give up. I made excuses such as “It’s too close to the holidays”, or “I’m just too busy right now,” but the simple fact of the matter was that I simply lacked the desire to do it. It just wasn’t there. I liked to eat, and I hated to exercise–I knew I needed to do something, but I simply did nothing. It kind of pains me to admit that. [Read more…]

Mom to two angel babies

Natural miscarriage 7 weeks 5 days on October 13, 2011
(EDD May 28, 2012)

Misoprostal-assisted miscarriage 9 weeks 3 day on January 16, 2012
(EDD August 17, 2012)

Washington, Illinois

My husband and I were married in January 2009. He came with three children from previous relationships and we had planned on having one of our own and working on that within the first year of marriage. Because of some things going on in my life at that time, we pushed it back a couple of years and in November 2010, I went off the pill and we were just going to stop preventing to see what happened. By August of 2011, nothing had happened, so we tried OPKs and got our first positive pregnancy test on September 15. We were elated. Our EDD was 5/28/12, which we thought would be perfect. The baby would be here before summer got too hot and it would be nice enough that birthday parties could be held outside, etc. On October 4, at 6 weeks, 2 days, we had our first prenatal appointment and all we could see on the ultrasound was a gestational sac and yolk sac measuring less than five weeks. They took a beta draw which confirmed the pregnancy was not viable. I was given the choice of having a D&C, taking Cytotec/Misoprostol, or waiting for a natural miscarriage. I chose to wait and see and within a few days I began spotting. The spotting was very off and on for about five days. Once things really started happening, it lasted 14 hours and was over. Our first angel left us on 10/13/11 when it should have been 7w5d. [Read more…]

Mom to baby lost at 6 weeks August 2007

Benjamin Jason and Naomi Makenzie (twins), lost at 17 weeks
Born sleeping January 2, 2010

Albuquerque, New Mexico

In 2007 I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant. It definitely wasn’t planned, but I was immediately very excited from the time I saw those two pink lines! I was on cloud 9 because all I ever wanted was to be a mommy. My boyfriend at the time was living out of town so he decided he would move to where I live and we would get an apartment and start our little family. We started thinking of names for our baby. My boyfriend thought of Doroteo for a little boy, named after his grandfather, who was his main father figure and who he actually called dad rather than grandpa. I agreed that if we have a boy he would be named Doroteo and I decided I liked Imalda for a girl. I started being very cautious of everything I ate, drank, I didn’t lift heavy things, I took my prenatal vitamins every day. I made sure to take care of my baby so I could have a healthy little boy or girl. [Read more…]

Our journey started unexpectedly in January 2007 when we conceived our first son. We hadn’t been trying and in fact had just started birth control. We lost our little boy before we even knew of his existence. For the longest time, I didn’t even tell Chris (or anyone else for that matter). I just dealt with it on my own and reminded myself that we were nowhere near ready to have a child together. [Read more…]

Mom to Lily Natalie Anne, miscarried at 10 weeks August 10th, 2006

Australia

Lily Natalie’s story:

Ever since I knew the meaning of being a mother, I knew that was what I wanted to be. Even my chosen career path as a teacher involves me utilising my maternal feelings in guiding students through their education. As cousins, friends’ babies and other family members were born, I knew that, even at the age of 11, the feeling of a newborn baby in my arms was just…right. I dreamed, imagined, visualised myself holding a baby, mothering a baby, raising a tiny life. [Read more…]
