I am Amie. I am married to a wonderful man named Jeremy. We have two boys. Jeremy and I have been together for over 14 years. This is my first miscarriage. I am so sad and heartbroken. I know Jeremy is sad, too; I can see the hurt in his eyes as he tries not to show it. He is dealing with it in his own way. Christmas will be so hard. Ellie was due on December 8th. I can’t believe I will never hold her. I knew something wasn’t right a few weeks ago, but I tried to put it out of my mind. I have been waiting for this pregnancy and baby for so long that I tried like hell to ignore my instincts. When I started spotting on the Monday before, I knew I couldn’t ignore the signs anymore. As the bleeding progressed I started to become more scared. I call the OB nurse and she scheduled an ultrasound. I was 12 weeks along. Ellie had no heartbeat. My husband and I were married for just over two years when we decided it was time to start a family. I had just finished graduate school and had been ready for a baby for a while by that point.  We were pleasantly surprised when we got pregnant on our first try in November of 2009.  At first everything seemed okay, but I really wasn’t having any pregnancy symptoms, other than the need to pee all the time.  At my first prenatal appointment the midwife confirmed that I was indeed pregnant, but it was a “weak positive” on the test.   I was only about 4.5 to 5 weeks along at the time and was set up for an ultrasound about a week later.   [Read more...]

I should begin by telling you, admittedly, that up until this point in my life, I was a pretty lucky girl.

I came from a happy, nuclear family. I always had a small circle of great friends. I was fortunate to attend college, graduate in four (largely) uneventful years, and immediately find a teaching job while some of my peers were scrambling. I met my soul mate in college (although we knew one another in high school, but we hated each other then–another story for another blog post) and we had a nice, June wedding. During this time, I had misfortune in only one area–my health. Being overweight had been an attribute of mine for as long as I could remember. I went on diet after diet, but I would always lose a few pounds and then simply give up. I made excuses such as “It’s too close to the holidays”, or “I’m just too busy right now,” but the simple fact of the matter was that I simply lacked the desire to do it. It just wasn’t there. I liked to eat, and I hated to exercise–I knew I needed to do something, but I simply did nothing. It kind of pains me to admit that. [Read more...]

In May of 2008, after my husband and I both finished graduate school, we decided that we would start trying to add to our family. After a year we were referred to an RE to see why I still wasn’t pregnant.  It was then that I was diagnosed with PCOS.  After surgery, using a variety of meds (clomid, femara, ovidrel) and an IUI, I finally had a positive pregnancy test in November 2010.  We were overjoyed.  Thrilled beyond belief. After almost three years of trying to have a baby brother or sister for our son we went back to fertility doctor and started the process of artificial insemination.  Taking the meds and getting poked and prodded and of course the lack of physical intimacy in creating this child with my husband is a difficult process emotionally for both of us.  However after the success of AI with our first son we knew that it was just a fact of our lives that this was how we are to conceive.   In March of 2010 we got a positive result after two rounds.  I scheduled my first appointment and went in to get our ultrasound.  Watching this little “bean’s” heartbeat on the monitor was amazing.  Just thinking of all the possibilities for our future son or daughter was an experience that I loved and remembered fondly with my first pregnancy, and at that moment over filled my heart again.  I went home and shared the photos that were printed with my husband and son, and began sharing the news with my family and friends. My first pregnancy in 2010 with my daughter Lyla was very scary. We found out we were pregnant in January and were so excited! Everything was good until March. I had an extreme amount of bleeding that I woke up to at 2 am one night. I was only 13 weeks. I was so scared but never gave up hope for my baby. I was in and out of the doctor’s office and E.R. that day getting ultrasounds. No one could figure out why I was bleeding the way I was, and some believed I was going to miscarry. The only explanation was that they found that I have a bicornuate uterus (heart-shaped) and maybe that was the cause for the bleeding. They could see the baby, always fine and dancing, in the right horn and a large bleed in the left horn that was about 8 cm.  I was put on complete bedrest to wait it out at home. Once the bleeding subsided after a few days, I starting getting severe cramping/contractions and started passing large blood clots. I was so scared, but still never gave up hope. I remember calling the nurse and asking her about what was going on and she said that if I was going to miscarry, there was nothing they could do. That made me really upset. [Read more...]

In 1998, at the ripe old age of 16 I found that I was pregnant.  Terrified and unsure of what the future held, I hung on to my pregnancy and was determined to be the best mother possible to that little child that I was carrying.  My mother asked me if I wanted an abortion, I refused.  Hindsight is always 20/20 and I thank God that my mother was not more persistent.  Had she forced me into an abortion, I would have never been able to experience the joy that my son has been able to offer me.  That pregnancy went perfectly.  No complications at all.  I did gain a ton of weight, but I suppose that is natural given the large amount of food I was consuming. I took 7 more tests just to make sure and they were all positive. When it finally sunk it I just burst into tears of joy… I was pregnant! My husband and I have been together for about 3 1/2 years prior to getting married.  Before the wedding, we knew that we would want to start trying for a baby right away after getting married – due to the fact that he already has two children from a previous marriage and that he is quite a bit older than I am.  We were married on May 20th 2011, and everything went off without a hitch!  We spent our honeymoon in Jamaica, which was a wonderful time.
