I am American, living abroad in Spain.  We found out on September 14th, 2011 that I was pregnant with our much-desired baby number 2.  Our firstborn, Manuela, was just eleven months old, but truth be told, we had been trying since soon after she joined us.  There was “no rush” but we did want them to be close together in age (they would have been 19 months apart).  We were thrilled with the positive result and began to make plans for our new baby’s early May arrival. I should begin by telling you, admittedly, that up until this point in my life, I was a pretty lucky girl.

I came from a happy, nuclear family. I always had a small circle of great friends. I was fortunate to attend college, graduate in four (largely) uneventful years, and immediately find a teaching job while some of my peers were scrambling. I met my soul mate in college (although we knew one another in high school, but we hated each other then–another story for another blog post) and we had a nice, June wedding. During this time, I had misfortune in only one area–my health. Being overweight had been an attribute of mine for as long as I could remember. I went on diet after diet, but I would always lose a few pounds and then simply give up. I made excuses such as “It’s too close to the holidays”, or “I’m just too busy right now,” but the simple fact of the matter was that I simply lacked the desire to do it. It just wasn’t there. I liked to eat, and I hated to exercise–I knew I needed to do something, but I simply did nothing. It kind of pains me to admit that. [Read more...]

My husband and I had been trying for six months to get pregnant. I couldn’t believe it when I (finally) got a positive pregnancy test! I took eight tests to make sure. We were so excited! We’d been together nine years, married for one year, and were ready to start our family. We kept the news to ourselves for two weeks told our immediate family about the pregnancy at six weeks. In May of 2008, after my husband and I both finished graduate school, we decided that we would start trying to add to our family. After a year we were referred to an RE to see why I still wasn’t pregnant.  It was then that I was diagnosed with PCOS.  After surgery, using a variety of meds (clomid, femara, ovidrel) and an IUI, I finally had a positive pregnancy test in November 2010.  We were overjoyed.  Thrilled beyond belief. After almost three years of trying to have a baby brother or sister for our son we went back to fertility doctor and started the process of artificial insemination.  Taking the meds and getting poked and prodded and of course the lack of physical intimacy in creating this child with my husband is a difficult process emotionally for both of us.  However after the success of AI with our first son we knew that it was just a fact of our lives that this was how we are to conceive.   In March of 2010 we got a positive result after two rounds.  I scheduled my first appointment and went in to get our ultrasound.  Watching this little “bean’s” heartbeat on the monitor was amazing.  Just thinking of all the possibilities for our future son or daughter was an experience that I loved and remembered fondly with my first pregnancy, and at that moment over filled my heart again.  I went home and shared the photos that were printed with my husband and son, and began sharing the news with my family and friends. In July 2008 I found out we were pregnant with our 2nd child. It was a surprise but we were excited nonetheless. That excitement quickly ended after only a couple weeks when I started bleeding. I called my husband who was at work..I was crying so hard I’m surprised even understood me. I called my doctor and explained that I was bleeding and worried. She told me if it was brown or light pinkish blood it was most likely old blood and I was fine. However, if it is red blood that means it is fresh and could mean a miscarriage. Mine was bright red. This month marks the 3 year anniversary of when my husband and I started “trying” to conceive. It didn’t always feel like trying because by March of 09 I began charting and shortly after I identified a problem–I wasn’t ovulating. After some time, a visit to a few doctors, I discovered that I had hyperprolactinemia and after a 6 month hold-out from my doctor, finally he agreed to remove the medication that was causing it. I ovulated 2 weeks later! Then in July 2010, on my mother’s birthday and week before mine, I got a positive pregnancy test. It was light, but I was testing quite early. The digital confirmed it. I was so excited I was hyperventilating at first. Then I sent a picture to my husband. The due date was about 2-3 days before his birthday. We had nicknamed our little one “monkey” because it was all the rage in baby items at the time. [Read more...]

In 1998, at the ripe old age of 16 I found that I was pregnant.  Terrified and unsure of what the future held, I hung on to my pregnancy and was determined to be the best mother possible to that little child that I was carrying.  My mother asked me if I wanted an abortion, I refused.  Hindsight is always 20/20 and I thank God that my mother was not more persistent.  Had she forced me into an abortion, I would have never been able to experience the joy that my son has been able to offer me.  That pregnancy went perfectly.  No complications at all.  I did gain a ton of weight, but I suppose that is natural given the large amount of food I was consuming.
