Mom to Alana

Stillborn October 4, 2013

Katonah, New York

Alana Marie Banerjee was born on October 4th, 2013 at 2:21 a.m. – 6 lbs 8 oz of pure joy for me and her father. At 20 inches long, she was a tall baby, with long skinny legs, slender fingers with perfect miniature nails, and big soft feet with all the requisite toes. She had her father’s nose and ears and eyelashes, my lips and eyebrows, the softest skin I’ve ever felt, and a full head of silky black hair. There was only one thing wrong with this storybook ending; following nine months of a perfectly healthy and blissful pregnancy, our daughter was born dead.

Alana died at 39 weeks 5 days, just two days short of her due date.  Up until the moment the nurse couldn’t find a heartbeat, she’d been healthy and strong.  The doctors had called her fetal monitor read-outs “textbook.”  She’d been active and lively, rolling around in my belly, suffering adorable bouts of in-utero hiccups (often more than once a day) for weeks.  She’d passed every prenatal test with flying colors.  There was never a cause for concern – never a single warning sign.  Until, all of a sudden, she was gone.

Stillborn September 10, 2012

Placentia, California

My first pregnancy felt like a dream come true.

My husband and I had decided in December 2011 that now was the time–We’d officially try for a baby.  We had no idea that things would go so smoothly.  After literally one month of trying, I missed my period, took a test, and there it was–Positive. It was also Friday, January 13, 2012. Maybe that was foreshadowing? I don’t even believe in superstitions, but I still wish I’d taken that test on any other day… [Read more…]

Sarah Elisabeth was born on November 12, 2009. She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ½ ounces and was 19 ¼ inches long. She had black curly hair and dark blue eyes. She was my first child. My pregnancy journey began on April 7, 2009, when I found out I was pregnant. Much of my pregnancy was normal. I felt sick and needed to eat every few hours. I was so tired I would take naps.

Mom to Naima Kali

Birth Date: March 25, 2011
Angel Day: August 3, 2011

Bay Area, California

Naima was my firstborn and only child (so far) and the light of my life. I had a normal and easy pregnancy with her, which as an older mom (I was 38 when I got pregnant) made me feel so blessed and happy. My husband, Henry, and I had waited a long time to get pregnant but I had wanted a child for many many years, so I was so happy to finally have a baby to look forward to. Naima was born on her due date (a rare occurrence I was told) after about twelve hours of active, natural labor. She cried as soon as she was born, and even lifted her head to look me straight in the eyes after they placed her on my chest! I knew from even the time she was in my belly that she was a gentle, wise and special soul.

At the 32 week check up, I measured a little small. The doctor considered a sonogram. If she was concerned, I was willing to do the sonogram. I wanted a healthy baby. The doctor decided the sonogram didn’t need to be done. I felt regular movements from the baby and waited for my July 5th appointment.

My husband and I were thrilled to find out the awesome news that in May 2012, we were expecting. I had a wonderful pregnancy with no morning sickness. I continued to exercise, ate healthy and did all the things I was supposed to. Because of my age (39 at the time) I was monitored at lot, beginning at 32 weeks. I was going twice a week for ultrasounds, non-stress tests, etc. All looked great! Lilliana even passed her bio-physical with flying colors. We were so happy and anticipating her arrival. We had just about finished her nursery, her clothes were washed and waiting for her.

I am 21 years old and I have endometriosis. I have to take fertility medicine if I want to have kids. We decided we were ready, so I took it [medicines] and I took three pregnancy tests the next month before I made my doctor’s appointment. We were so excited. We were ready for our lives to change forever. I went to the doctor’s and he told me I was 4 weeks and 5 days, but to be careful because it would possibly be a tubal pregnancy.

We started trying in October 2013, right after our wedding and we were so happy when we found out that I was pregnant by the end of March 2014. Everything went well during my pregnancy. I never got too sick, I was never too uncomfortable and I loved knowing I was growing a little baby inside of me. [Read more…]

Cartersville, Virginia

It was October when I took a pregnancy test. I remember taking it at work. It was positive and I was like, that’s not possible. My husband and I had just starting trying in September. Being so shocked, I decided to take another one; it too was positive. I couldn’t contain my excitement and just had to tell my husband. I called him at work and he was ecstatic, as I knew he would be. We never imagined getting pregnant so quickly and we also never imagined losing Caleb so quickly. It is still so unreal. This week will be 8 weeks and it feels like yesterday that I was pregnant [at time of writing]. It all seems like a terrible dream.

It was on the morning of the 20th December, 2011 that I noticed that I was pregnant with my first child and my initial reaction was one of joy and adulation, mixed with a certain amount of anxiety and apprehension regarding the pregnancy at the thought of breaking the news to family and friends around me and the ‘unknown’ in terms of how they’d receive the news. I also didn’t want to go getting too excited too early on in the pregnancy given that it was still only early days. [Read more…]

On the day I was 30 weeks pregnant, it started as a normal day. I didn’t have to work so I decided to spend the day relaxing and spending time with Derek, the father of my son. When I was laying in bed, I started shaking a lot, but was not in any pain, yet. After the shaking had calmed down, I decided I was going to get up and take a shower. As soon as I stood up, I had this pain in my belly. I really had no idea what was happening but at first it didn’t seem so serious.

Asher James September 10- October 23, 2012.

In June 2011, I found out I was pregnant and I was beyond excited. I told everyone right away and started planning the nursery. I couldn’t wait to find out what we were having, hoping for a little girl. We started picking out names and could only agree on a girl’s name – Olivia Madilynn. On my husband’s birthday, we found out we were having a little girl. I started making cute things for her and for her room. Even though I wasn’t due ’til February, our families had our baby showers in November. We received so many cute things for this little girl. I couldn’t wait till she was here and she could wear all the cute things but that all changed the week of Thanksgiving when I was 27 weeks.

Livermore, California

My name is Bonnie. I am 30 years old, married to my loving husband since 2010 and this year (2013) [at time of submission] I was supposed to become a mommy. Her name was Delilah Sage and she was born full tern at 40 weeks and 4 days. She was a beautiful little girl, 6 pounds and 6 ounces and she was perfect. She had my nose and big eyes like her daddy. Her upper lip was like hers dad’s while her lower lip was like mine. She had my long toes. I carried her for nine months and every single one of those days I fell in love with her more.

My life changed forever the moment I saw those two pink lines. My life changed forever again 7 weeks later when we found out that our first child had no heartbeat. I can honestly say that it was the worst day of my life so far. Although it is hard, I hope that sharing my story can give people an honest look into miscarriage and can help someone else who is going through their own loss.

My husband and I were so excited when we found out that we were pregnant. My pregnancy was going great, I couldn’t feel more like a woman/mother during this period. All ultrasounds and checks were ok and we were just waiting for our baby to be born. To see what the baby’s gender would be and how it would look like.

But on Monday the 25th of July 2011, when I was 37 weeks pregnant, it goes terribly wrong. That evening, I was brought to the hospital by ambulance because of serious belly ache. I passed out several times. By the time I arrived in the hospital I was in shock. I was rushed to surgery to get the baby out. In surgery they found out that I had an internal bleeding. I lost about 3.5 liters of blood.

Emma Kate is our first child. We were so unaware, joking around about guessing the gender as we went into our 1st trimester screening. We learned that day that something was very wrong and went straight to another specialist to have a CVS Test performed. We quickly learned that our precious girl had Turner Syndrome, a chromosomal condition that is not hereditary. Her DNA was just missing a puzzle piece. [Read more…]

I was 22 and in a relationship that I thought was built on “love”. I was at work when the smell of cinnamon made me feel nauseous. My co-worker chuckled and said, “Uh, oh,” and we laughed. I honestly didn’t think I was pregnant. When I discovered I was pregnant, I was scared but absolutely thrilled. I shared the news with my boyfriend and he informed me he was not ready for a child. He basically gave me an ultimatum, which I wanted no part of. Basically, I chose baby and gave my boyfriend the boot. I was scared, but I had great parents and friends and knew they would be there for me. The pregnancy went by rather quickly and my daughter Lauren Ashley was born on 4/7/2000. [Read more…]

Mom to Makenna Allene

Born still September 1, 2012 at 39 weeks

Alexandria, Virginia

I am the face of…a yearned for baby that was taken from me, full term.

Geoff and I had thoroughly discussed and planned for having a child; we thought this was the penultimate display of our love and commitment to each other. So, when I went for a fertility consultation at 38 years old and was told, basically, that I “should not” be thinking about having a child and that I potentially could not at “this age”, imagine our shock and surprise when I became pregnant a month later. We considered our baby girl, Makenna, a miracle baby from the beginning. We celebrated announcing our pregnancy with a party, and when we found out at 18 weeks that we were having a healthy baby girl we celebrated with another “gender reveal” party. Our friends threw us a huge co-ed baby shower. Every chance we could, we joyfully jumped headlong into planning for and celebrating her arrival. All through the pregnancy I avoided caffeine and alcohol, ate right, drank water, exercised, slept on my side – you name it, I did it. [Read more…]
