Mom to Emma Kate

Born still September 26, 2013

Richardson, TX

Emma Kate is our first child. We were so unaware, joking around about guessing the gender as we went into our 1st trimester screening. We learned that day that something was very wrong and went straight to another specialist to have a CVS Test performed. We quickly learned that our precious girl had Turner Syndrome, a chromosomal condition that is not hereditary. Her DNA was just missing a puzzle piece. [Read more...]

Mom to Lauren Ashley

April 7, 2000 – September 9, 2000

New Port Richey, Florida

I was 22 and in a relationship that I thought was built on “love”. I was at work when the smell of cinnamon made me feel nauseous. My co-worker chuckled and said, “Uh, oh,” and we laughed. I honestly didn’t think I was pregnant. When I discovered I was pregnant, I was scared but absolutely thrilled. I shared the news with my boyfriend and he informed me he was not ready for a child. He basically gave me an ultimatum, which I wanted no part of. Basically, I chose baby and gave my boyfriend the boot. I was scared, but I had great parents and friends and knew they would be there for me. The pregnancy went by rather quickly and my daughter Lauren Ashley was born on 4/7/2000. [Read more...]

Mom to Makenna Allene

Born still September 1, 2012 at 39 weeks

Alexandria, Virginia

I am the face of…a yearned for baby that was taken from me, full term.

Geoff and I had thoroughly discussed and planned for having a child; we thought this was the penultimate display of our love and commitment to each other. So, when I went for a fertility consultation at 38 years old and was told, basically, that I “should not” be thinking about having a child and that I potentially could not at “this age”, imagine our shock and surprise when I became pregnant a month later. We considered our baby girl, Makenna, a miracle baby from the beginning. We celebrated announcing our pregnancy with a party, and when we found out at 18 weeks that we were having a healthy baby girl we celebrated with another “gender reveal” party. Our friends threw us a huge co-ed baby shower. Every chance we could, we joyfully jumped headlong into planning for and celebrating her arrival. All through the pregnancy I avoided caffeine and alcohol, ate right, drank water, exercised, slept on my side – you name it, I did it. [Read more...]

I was 26 weeks and 4 days pregnant with my first child. My husband, Aaron, had been out of town for a National Sales Convention for work. I went to Dr. Bruhn on Tuesday, January 24 for my scheduled appointment. This was the only appointment that Aaron had not been able to make so Sarah, my twin sister, went with me. At this appointment I had to do the whole glucose tolerance test thing and I was thrilled when the nurse told me that my blood sugar levels and hemoglobin were both perfect. Dr. Bruhn got out her hand-held Doppler and listened to Jonah’s heart beat at 150 beats per minute. She assured me that everything looked great and she would see me back in four weeks. Mom to Adam

Born still June 11, 2012

Santa Clara, California

I found out I was pregnant in October 2011. I was 31 years old and this was my first, and I waited to tell everyone until December 2011, after our ultrasound, to make sure he was healthy.  My pregnancy was going well until week 32 when I went in for early contractions and they found too much amniotic fluid; the level was at 26, and I was also dilated to 2 cm at this point.  I was hospitalized for a few days and sent home with meds for the contractions and told to take it easy. I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks on November 10, 2011. It was the most exciting day! I took 3 pregnancy tests just make sure I wasn’t imagining it. I surprised my husband when he got home by leaving the pregnancy tests on the bathroom counter. We were both so excited and already making plans for our future with this new chapter of our lives. We told our families we were expecting on Thanksgiving Day, 2 weeks later. I’ll never forget the feeling of telling everyone else, pure joy! [Read more...]

Mom to Oliver John

Born an angel February 2, 2012

Washington, DC area

The first time I thought about motherhood, I was 8 or 9 years old. Since then, I have always wanted to have a family.

Andy and I got married in 2008 and had the perfect wedding we planned for. We were both attending graduate school and got into our universities of choice. We soon were homeowners in a charming town that was filled with young families. Every corner you looked, there was a dog towed by a new mom, pushing little bundles of joy in the newest strollers on the market. I couldn’t wait for this to be a part of my life. [Read more...]

Born and died February 23, 2012

Laidley, Australia

It was on the morning of the 20th December, 2011 that I noticed that I was pregnant with my first child and my initial reaction was one of joy and adulation, mixed with a certain amount of anxiety and apprehension regarding the pregnancy at the thought of breaking the news to family and friends around me and the` unknown’ in terms of how they’d receive the news. I also didn’t want to go getting too excited too early on in the pregnancy given that it was still only early days. [Read more...]

Mom to Jayden Dayne

Born and passed April 29, 2004

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

My husband, Jason, and I found out we were expecting our first child after only 2 years of marriage. We both loved kids and couldn’t have been more excited!

My first trimester was a nightmare. I couldn’t keep anything down, not even water. I went into the ER for dehydration, lost 25 lbs in two weeks, and Jason had to carry me to and from the bathroom to bathe me. Through multiple doctors visits, baby seemed just fine. At exactly 12 weeks, the first trimester sickness left as quickly as it came on. I started eating everything in sight! Haha! It took me two weeks to regain strength enough to walk on my own. Having never been through this before, I assumed this was normal. I found out years later this was not. [Read more...]

Mom to Angel Baby

Lost January 11, 2010

Franklin, NC

My husband and I were married for just over two years when we decided it was time to start a family. I had just finished graduate school and had been ready for a baby for a while by that point.  We were pleasantly surprised when we got pregnant on our first try in November of 2009.  At first everything seemed okay, but I really wasn’t having any pregnancy symptoms, other than the need to pee all the time.  At my first prenatal appointment the midwife confirmed that I was indeed pregnant, but it was a “weak positive” on the test.   I was only about 4.5 to 5 weeks along at the time and was set up for an ultrasound about a week later.   [Read more...]

Mom to Silas Hunter

July 23, 2011 - August 1, 2011

Newark, Ohio

I started having Braxton Hicks at around 19 weeks. Nothing to be worried about, except once after we moved. I was having them for a good 45 minutes about every 4-5 minutes. I called my doctor and we stopped them. About 2 weeks later (maybe sooner, it’s all been a rush), I woke up about 6:15am with Braxton Hicks…the ones I had gone to bed with.  But then I started getting pains..”Oh crap, I’m constipated.” These pains, oh my goodness, they kept getting worse. I went downstairs and tried to walk around, drink water, and I laid down. Boyfriend was upstairs in bed still, it was a Saturday. About 11 or so, I woke him up because I couldn’t take it anymore. I called Labor & Delivery and they told me to get some Milk of Magnesia. My boyfriend ran to the store and got it, came back a half hour or so later, but it wasn’t working and the pain was getting worse. [Read more...]

July 27th, 2007-August 23rd, 2007

La Mesa, CA

I was ecstatic when I found out my husband and I were expecting our first baby. We had waited a long time to start a family, and were both excited and nervous at how our lives would change from being a couple, to adding a new little baby to the mix. At our 20 week ultrasound, we were told that we were having a boy. I was happy…I’ve always been a tomboy, and the prospect of pink, ruffly dresses, and barbies was a little intimidating! My pregnancy was pretty normal, I was fat and cranky most of the time, and towards the end, I was REALLY ready to meet our son….whose name was to be Logan Timothy.

My name is Rachel and my husband, Joshua, and I have been married since March 2009. Mom to Brinley Nicole

Stillborn at 37 weeks on August 18th, 2010

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

From the beginning, I was scared of the little life inside of me. I didn’t know what I would do with a baby. I didn’t feel ready yet to be a mother. Of course, I loved little kids, but babies? Babies were a different kind of commitment. They completely rely on you for their comfort of living. It took me 8 months to be ready to have this new baby in my life. I was feeling ready to take care of her for the rest of my life. I looked forward to holding her, dressing her, feeding her, and playing with her. She was going to be a new chapter in my life that I was excited to start writing. [Read more...]
