Mom to Aulbrey Lynn Myers and Two Other Angels

Born Sleeping on May 28, 2017, March 27, 2016 and December 26, 2016

Graham, North Carolina

After 2 early pregnancy losses within a few months, I became pregnant again with high hopes. In February 2017, my husband and I were so scared but blessed and so excited at the same time to finally have the luxury of being parents. At my first appointment, I was 6 weeks pregnant. I was so terrified waiting on the doctor to come in to do my ultrasound. After having such bad luck with my other 2 pregnancies (one chemical and one blighted ovum), I was so full of hope. [I was] praying continuously for a heartbeat. I saw the flicker before my doctor could even measure the baby’s heart beat. I began to cry with joy.

We were so happy. Her heartbeat was 109 bpm, strong and healthy! I went in routinely as this was a high risk pregnancy because of the recurrent losses I’ve suffered. Everything was perfect. At 7 weeks, my baby was able to move around (couldn’t feel her yet) but we could see it on the screen at every appointment; she was very active. No problems at all. She grew fast. I had severe morning sickness up until I was 12 weeks. I went in for my NT scan. She was wiggling everywhere. She wouldn’t sit still for the scan, lol. My perfect active baby! I was so happy, happier than I’d ever been. I also had bloodwork done to check the baby for genetic defects, down syndrome and to find out the gender. The scan came back at 14 weeks, negative for any defects and I was told we were expecting a healthy and happy BABY GIRL!!! I was over the moon excited. [Read more…]

Mom to Baby Gunn

Overland Park, Kansas

Why did this happen to us? After months of trying to convince my husband to have another child, we finally began trying. We became pregnant and then 12 weeks later we lost our baby on the bathroom floor.

I just don’t understand it and I’m not sure I ever will. I knew from our very first ultrasound at 5 weeks in the emergency room for cramping that something wasn’t right. The doctor came in and said “we see a gestational sac but there is no baby in it at this time”, my heart sunk and I became speechless. [Read more…]

Miscarried at 8 weeks pregnant
(October 2008 –November 2008)

Fort Wayne, Indiana

When my husband and I married in October of 2006, we decided that we were going to start trying to conceive right away.  Maybe I just knew deep down that something was wrong, maybe it was just luck, but I thought that it made more sense to try earlier than later.  A month went by, then two, then 6, then a year.  Even though I had no diagnosis, I knew that something was wrong.  “We are in our early twenties; we should be pregnant by now!” I sobbed to my husband.  Another year passed and our second anniversary approached, still childless.  I had just resigned myself to the point where I was getting ready to admit defeat.  Then, one night, while waiting for our staff meeting, I randomly broke down in tears.  While the last two years had been emotionally rough, it was not at all like me to just randomly break down like that.  I thought it was weird, but I brushed it off and went to the meeting.  The next morning, I woke up and was getting ready for work and broke down again.  My husband walked by and asked if I was ok, commenting, “It’s not like you to be so emotional.”  [Read more…]

Miscarried April 5, 2012 (blighted ovum)

Tampa, Florida

My boyfriend and I were not trying to get pregnant at the time. I missed my period while we were on a ski trip, and I had decided that if I still didn’t have my period by the time we got back to Florida that I was going to take a test. When I took the test and saw two pink lines, I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to feel. I was scared and overwhelmed as well as happy. We live in a 1 bedroom condo and both hate our jobs. Blighted ovum, February 2011

Indianapolis, Indiana

The pregnancy wasn’t planned at the time (it was a future plan my boyfriend and I had), but finding out in December 2011 that it was happening was the greatest thing ever! We found out in March 2012 we were having a little girl (it was a Wednesday, to be exact), and we already agreed to name her Kennedy Aleecia.

Well, that Friday I continued on with my day like normal, but my body felt funny; there was so much pressure down there, but I overlooked it and just thought, “OK, I’m going to go home lay down go to sleep.” I woke up when my boyfriend got off work around 5am…and I was bleeding. We go to the ER. They tell  I’m getting admitted to maturity. We get upstairs, they look and check and tell me my cervix is open and they’re going to do a surgery and tie (vaginal cerclage). Baby is fine (heart rate and everything)…so they do they surgery. I stay there a few more days, and then I’m home. The next day I need to go back, they said I’m fine and sent me home. [Read more…]

A miscarriage or blighted ovum turned out to be the most horrific thing I’d ever gone through, or so I thought at that time. My body was slumped over the bathroom floor that hot afternoon in June. I was told to expect “period cramps and bleeding,” but this was a pain unequalled to anything I’d ever known. It was as though my insides were ripping apart, my abdominal cavity was closing in on itself. Beads of sweat poured down my face and I contemplated calling an ambulance. “Is it supposed to hurt this bad?” I thought to myself. I stumbled to the bathroom and sat on the toilet. I felt something at my cervix and felt inclined to push, I was consumed with terror as I knew whatever was there was indeed no blood clot. To my horror I heard a splash in to the toilet, my heart thumped from terror afraid to look. I still to this day don’t know what it was, maybe it was placenta. Shock, fear and anger possessed me as I stood there limp, looking at the tissue and blood that passed from my body. My hands were smeared with it; the bathroom floor and sink were riddled with it. That day was the worst day of my life…but only up until that point. [Read more…]

Missed miscarriage at 12 weeks in December 2010,
Blighted ovum at 7 weeks in April 2011,
and missed miscarriage at 17 weeks in September 2011

Near Albany, New York

The story of my first missed miscarriage is here: http://facesofloss.com/2011/01/652.html. Since that time, I’ve had two additional losses.

I found myself pregnant again at the end of March 2011. I had betas drawn, and it didn’t look good. It was a 133 hour doubling time, when it should have been 24-48 hours. I went in for my first ultrasound at 6.5 weeks and only saw an empty sac. They tried to reassure me that it was in the right place, to give it time, but I started bleeding a few days later. Follow-up ultrasound and betas confirmed a completed natural miscarriage. It had been a blighted ovum. [Read more…]

Mom to baby lost November 20, 2011

Spring Hill, Florida

My story starts like most do. My husband and I had been “trying” to get pregnant for 4 years. Around August we decided to track my cycle for a few months and see what happens. Early October (our wedding anniversary month) we decided to give it a good try. I tracked when I should ovulate, and according to that we tried. It was a successful month…on October 22nd I took an early pregnancy test. I looked at the test, disappointed by what I saw, placed it down on the counter and walked away. A few minutes later something told me to go back in and check it out…sure enough there was that amazing 2nd line, very faint but it was there. I immediately showed my hubby, and while we were nervous we decided that this was our time. The next morning I had to be to work early so I ran by good ol’ Walmart and grabbed 2 more boxes of tests. During the next few days I continued to test, and the line became darker. I tested fairly early, so it took about 4 days to get that really beautiful dark 2nd line.

Mom to her little one

D&C November 9th, 2011

Montclair, New Jersey

Our rollercoaster ride began almost immediately after our wedding in late June 2011.  That August, after having not gotten my period since two days after our wedding, I began to see medical professionals to find out why 1. I had not gotten my period and 2. I was feeling so tired, nauseous, and dizzy. I took lots of pregnancy tests and they all came out negative. In mid-September the symptoms had vanished and I got an ultrasound done that confirmed I had a cyst on my ovary and we were told it was unlikely I would be able to ovulate with it there. We were also told to wait a few weeks more and if I didn’t get a period that they would start me on a medication to induce my period to start. I began feeling all those symptoms again and took yet another pregnancy test just to check and it came out positive!  We were ecstatic!  It wasn’t in our plan but after all of this uncertainty it was a welcome, happy outcome.

Mom to Gracen Maize

Born asleep May 3, 2011

Mount Pleasant, Michigan

My story initially starts in October 2010 – the 25th to be exact. That was the day we got our first positive pregnancy test after 16 months of actively trying. We were blissfully excited until about 5 weeks along when I started spotting. Beta draws revealed that the numbers weren’t doubling like they should have been. An ultrasound at 6 weeks determined there to be nothing in the sac. My OB suspected a blighted ovum. We scheduled another ultrasound for a week later. The night before the ultrasound, I miscarried, on my own, at 7 weeks.

My husband and I started trying to conceive our first child shortly after we got married.  I had been on the pill for nearly 14 years and had never tried to get pregnant, so I didn’t know what to expect.  To our surprise and delight, I got pregnant during my second cycle!  Like any first-time mom, I was excited and anxious at the same time.  We shared the good news with our close friends and family, but planned to wait until we heard a heartbeat to tell the rest of the world. and 10 early losses July 2004-Sept 2007

Calgary, Alberta Canada

My journey to become a mother started in July 2004. My boyfriend (now husband) and I discovered we were pregnant, I had just turned 20. The timing was not perfect and there were so many things going on between us in our relationship that we were not sure where this was headed, but we were excited. I had had a previous child in 2002 and had given him up for adoption, and since that day I had always felt I was missing that part of me that yearned to be a mother. I don’t regret placing my first child for adoption, I know I wasn’t ready and neither was the babies father, and the family I placed him with were very loving, and experienced a lot of loss on their journey. My husband and I decided in October of 2010 that we would try to start our family in January 2011.  After talking to my Sister-In-Law on January 23, I realized that I was able to take an HPT.  I was 5 days out from my next period and I was almost shaking as I took the test.  PREGNANT!  My husband and I stared at in in disbelief.  We both started laughing and crying and hugged each other.  “It actually works!  Making a baby actually works!” we were saying.  We were so cocky.  Looking back I feel so embarrassed about how overly confident we were. On July 9th, 2010 I woke up much earlier than usual and for some reason decided while still half asleep that I would take a pregnancy test, it was still a day or two early to be testing but something in me said it couldn’t hurt. When I saw the two lines on that test I instantly screamed. After a year and a half of infertility treatment that included provera, clomid and follistim as well as countless blood work & ultrasounds we were finally pregnant. We soon found out that my HCG levels were not up to par and an early ultrasound showed a blighted ovum. [Read more…]

I always knew I wanted children, but I didn’t seriously think about it until I got married to my high school sweetheart in June 2006, at age 20. Then suddenly it was like a lightbulb went on and I knew that I just wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I knew it was best for me to finish college first, but it was a big struggle for me to have to wait awhile to try to have a baby. By early 2007 we had stopped using any contraception, and in June 2007 I found out that I was pregnant. [Read more…]
