It was September 7, 2011 and I remember feeling sick, tired, and emotional.  I told my husband I knew I was pregnant, so when I took the test the next morning I was not shocked to see two pink lines staring back at me.  I tested the next several days and watched the line darken, which was very reassuring.  At the time I was 21 years old, a newlywed, and my first pregnancy had gone so smoothly. If you would have asked me when I was 20 where I would be in 5 years, the answer would have come out loud and clear: having babies.  There was never a doubt in my mind that my purpose in life was to become a mom and when I met my husband, Gabriel, when I was 24, I knew that that purpose was going to be fulfilled.  I loved my life; I was living in Hawaii, working at Tripler Army Medical Center as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I had been in the Army for 6 years, and had found exactly who I was.  Meeting Gabe was like the icing on the cake. Once we started dating, we knew that we wanted to have children, which was on the table even before getting married was. Luckily for us, 8 months later we found out we were pregnant.  I was back in Texas when I found out the news. I called Gabe, who was still in Hawaii, and told him, “You are going to be a daddy!”  We were both so incredibly excited!  We were getting married in just over a month, so it was perfect.  I couldn’t believe what the doctor was telling me, so I went home and took at least 10-15more pregnancy tests; all of them were a clear positive! Life was good. We immediately told everyone, Facebook and all.  I would sit there drawing hearts on my tummy, with a smile on my face.  Each week I would write a quick update on what went on that week and how I was feeling; all the excitement that was building. My husband and I were married in January 2009. He came with three children from previous relationships and we had planned on having one of our own and working on that within the first year of marriage. Because of some things going on in my life at that time, we pushed it back a couple of years and in November 2010, I went off the pill and we were just going to stop preventing to see what happened. By August of 2011, nothing had happened, so we tried OPKs and got our first positive pregnancy test on September 15. We were elated. Our EDD was 5/28/12, which we thought would be perfect. The baby would be here before summer got too hot and it would be nice enough that birthday parties could be held outside, etc. On October 4, at 6 weeks, 2 days, we had our first prenatal appointment and all we could see on the ultrasound was a gestational sac and yolk sac measuring less than five weeks. They took a beta draw which confirmed the pregnancy was not viable. I was given the choice of having a D&C, taking Cytotec/Misoprostol, or waiting for a natural miscarriage. I chose to wait and see and within a few days I began spotting. The spotting was very off and on for about five days. Once things really started happening, it lasted 14 hours and was over. Our first angel left us on 10/13/11 when it should have been 7w5d. [Read more...]

I am a mother, but my two babies are in Heaven with Jesus. I am the face of ectopic pregnancy loss and early miscarriage.

My husband and I eloped to Las Vegas in July of 2006 after only dating for one month. In August, we found out that I was pregnant. That was a shocker. We weren’t ready, I wasn’t done with nursing school, we both didn’t have jobs to support a baby (much less ourselves) and quite frankly, we weren’t done growing up. But after the initial shock, we were excited…excited to welcome this baby into the world with loving arms…excited to embark on this unpredictable new journey. That excitement was short lived when I began bleeding while I was at work one day. We went to the doctor the same day and they told me that I was miscarrying. On July 21st, I went to my physician to get my hypothyroidism checked out like I do every 6 weeks, and while I was there I had asked the physician randomly about how my thyroid disease would affect my fertility. She had said, “You will have a hard time getting pregnant, if it even happens at all.” After this I had just given up hope of ever having a child, even though it’s all I had ever wanted. I found out that I was pregnant on June 11th. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw those two little pink lines appear on the hpt I had taken. I took 7 more tests just to make sure and they were all positive. When it finally sunk it I just burst into tears of joy… I was pregnant! It’s as if since they didn’t know the child’s name, or it had not yet been named, or the pregnancy didn’t yet “show,” our loss is somehow not as devastating. People often remark to us, “At least you didn’t know him/her,” “You can always have another one,” or “Probably it would have had a defect.”

We found out we were expecting our first little one on Aug 1 2009. We were so excited. We had only been off the pill a short time and didn’t expect it to happen so fast. We knew we wanted to start a family soon after our October 3, 2009 wedding so we were thrilled to be expecting even before that. From the minute we found out I was so in love with the life growing inside me. I just couldn’t wait for him or her to arrive. Just a few weeks later I started having severe cramps and spotting and for some reason I just knew something was wrong. We headed to the ER where I was admitted and looked after in the labour and delivery ward. The next day our worst nightmare became a reality. They couldn’t find a heartbeat or fetal pole on the ultrasound and my betas were dropping from the initial ones from earlier on. We lost our first little bean on Aug 20 2009 at 8 weeks 6 days. It truly felt as if the world was ending. Everything I had hoped and dreamed for was being ripped from us. We threw ourselves  into planning the rest of our wedding. It wasn’t until after the wedding that we really started to grieve and process the loss. It took months and months of longs talks, lots of tears and some counseling to be able to face each day without complete and utter grief.
