Mom to Shiloh

June 25, 2013

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Our baby girl was diagnosed with a cystic hygroma (extra fluid on the back of her neck) at our 13-week ultrasound. The doctors told us she most likely had a chromosomal abnormality that caused the hygroma, and there was a chance she could die before she was born. We were devastated, as we wanted everything to be perfect with our first baby. We took a blood test that tested for Down Syndrome, Turners Syndrome, Trisomy 13, and Trisomy 18. The tests came back negative for all, and that is when we found out we were having a daughter.

My husband and I have been together since I was 18 and he was 20. We married young and had our first daughter shortly after. At 4 years of age, right around the time we started thinking about another baby, our sweet little girl was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. To say we were devastated was an understatement. With this disease and all that comes with it–multiple daily shots, multiple daily finger pricks to test her blood sugar, frightening high and low blood sugars, we thought that having a baby would be more than we could handle and decided to put it off until we got the hang of diabetes.

Leigha

Mom to Reagan

September 1, 2013

Tempe, Arizona

My name is Leigha, and I am here to tell you Reagan’s story. I found out I was pregnant in June 2013. I was very scared, and didn’t know what to do. I knew one thing, I wanted this beautiful child. I struggled for months with light bleeding. ER visits galore. They found a large cyst on my one remaining ovary that was growing very rapidly, and gave the cyst a month to shrink. The doctor said if it doesn’t get smaller, surgery was my only option. A month passed by, and the cyst shrunk from 8 cm to 2.4 cm!! I was so relieved, and thanked God so much that I didn’t need surgery. Everything was fine I thought… but it wasn’t.

February 20, 2013 – April 23, 2013

Nashua, New Hampshire & Paharganj, New Delhi, India

For two Dads-to-be, Gestational Surrogacy in India was our only option. Sarah-Taran Katherine was our first child together, born through a Gestational Surrogate-Mother. Sarah entered the world 9 weeks too early. Alone, in an Indian Hospital, she waited for me as I rushed from Boston Logan International Airport to Indira Ghandi International Airport in New Delhi, India. Twenty-seven hours by plane, three hours by auto, another 20 minutes to make my way through the sea of people, stopped by each and every security guard for appearing “out of place.” I guess that is the reality for a 6’2” 185 lb Eastern European blonde, blue-eyed 34-year-old in the company of so many people whose faces where covered. I wished I could have covered my face without looking even more inconspicuous than I already did.

When I was 17 years old, I found out I was pregnant. I was terrified, but excited. The entire pregnancy was perfect, resulting in a beautiful healthy little boy. A year and a half later, I found out I was pregnant again. Of course, I thought everything would be just as easy. How naive I was. Less than a week after I’d found out, I started spotting. I went to the ER, where blood work was done (twice, since they lost it!) as well as an emergency ultrasound. After the technician did her measurements, she turned the screen to me and showed me my perfect little bean, with a good strong heartbeat.

I found out I was pregnant December 29, 2012. I felt great and was absolutely thrilled! My husband and I were so excited and couldn’t wait to add a new addition to the family! My two boys were also happy and they wanted a baby sister. I had my first baby doctor’s appointment on January 2nd and everything was great. After my first doctor’s appointment, I ended up having an internal ultrasound done to check on the baby and the [technician] was so rude and very rough. It hurt very badly, and she even ripped me. Anyway, the following Sunday I had a spot of blood but I didn’t worry about it.

September 16, 2010 and May 10, 2013

Belfast, Northern Ireland

On September 16th 2010, I had an ectopic pregnancy. I was having extremely sharp pain in my left side of my stomach and didn’t know I was pregnant and didn’t suspect it either. My boyfriend insisted I go to A&E to get it checked out. We arrived at 6:30 p.m. and I didn’t get a scan unto 2 a.m. It was then confirmed that I was having an ectopic pregnancy. I was only 16 at the time and I didn’t have a clue at all what was going on, how to feel or how to react.

I am a mother to 3 amazing boys… one of whom was awarded his angel wings 8 months ago [at time of writing], after blessing our lives for 2 painful, yet most amazing days. He is our precious baby that almost wasn’t. The entire medical team advised us strongly to terminate as his complications could have brought a risk to me and we were told to consider this as we had our other two boys to think about.

My husband, Patrick, and I met on August 22, 2010.  We both quickly realized that this was different than any other relationship that had come before.  We fell in love fast and were engaged in April of 2011.  We got married on the one year anniversary of our first “official date” on August 27th, 2011.  We both knew we really wanted kids, but thought we should wait one year before officially “trying.”  It was August 25th, 2012, when I first saw those two pink lines.  We were so excited!  August was definitely a good month for us!  We went through all of the normal first time parent’s excitement and nervousness.  We read books, we shopped for baby clothes, we did everything you’re supposed to do.  Every kick, every heartbeat were all amazing and brought so much joy.  We were so filled with love for this tiny little person.  We were in awe.

Mom to Caleb Rex

February 19, 2013

Cartersville, Virginia

It was October when I took a pregnancy test. I remember taking it at work. It was positive and I was like, that’s not possible. My husband and I had just starting trying in September. Being so shocked, I decided to take another one; it too was positive. I couldn’t contain my excitement and just had to tell my husband. I called him at work and he was ecstatic, as I knew he would be. We never imagined getting pregnant so quickly and we also never imagined losing Caleb so quickly. It is still so unreal. This week will be 8 weeks and it feels like yesterday that I was pregnant [at time of writing]. It all seems like a terrible dream.

Mom to Jack Wyatt

Born and died March 19, 2013

Ann Arbor, Michigan

My first trimester had been pretty rocky – I had a what they called “threatened miscarriages” but after no miscarriage actually happened and my hormone levels kept rising – we were eventually told I had a subchorionic hematoma (or blood clot in the uterus) and to try and stay off my feet as much as possible and hope it cleared up on its own. That was stressful and scary. Around week 12, the ultrasound showed no sign of it! We were overjoyed. Then around week 16, more weird problems. I was having trouble urinating – I would feel like I had to go really bad, but nothing would come out. I went into the hospital and they diagnosed me with a super rare condition called “incarcerated uterus”. What happens is that the uterus gets trapped under the pubic bone as the baby grows, which blocks off the urethra, making it impossible to urinate. They had to keep me in catheters for 3 days (so not fun) – then they tried to physically move it out by hand, but it was excruciatingly painful for me, so my Dr. booked an OR and they gave me a spinal, then popped it out and into place. I could describe how scary and painful this whole ordeal was–but it seems almost trivial now, given what happened six weeks later. This was nothing–Jack was still alive, and that’s what mattered. Miscarried her first baby

March 18, 2013

Ardmore, Oklahoma

My husband and I married in December of 2012 with intentions of trying to get pregnant right away.  After a couple months of trying, I got a faint pink line of an in-home pregnancy test.  I was thrilled but still not 100% sure I was pregnant.  I waited until the next day and took another test with the same result.  Just to be sure, I purchased a digital test and it said PREGNANT!  I was ecstatic!  I cried and thanked God over and over again and I told God that I would thank him everyday of my pregnancy, which I did.  I have wanted to be a mom for so long. My dream was coming true.  I went out and bought a baby balloon and a chalkboard to write “We are Pregnant” on and I made my husband his favorite red velvet cupcakes.  I set it all up and when he came home, he was over-the-moon excited!  It was one of the best moments of my life. Angelversary December 10, 2013

Back in 2008 I found out that I was unexpectedly pregnant with twins.  At my 12 week appointment they found out that one of the babies had stopped growing shortly after my 8th week appointment and its heart had stopped.  I was warned that this could lead to a miscarriage of the surviving twin, but nothing happened…no pain…nothing…and I went on to have a healthy little girl who is now four years old. I had lost a baby but I didn’t truly understand miscarriage. It didn’t truly feel like a loss. I went on to also have a healthy pregnancy of a now 1 year old little boy.

My husband just returned from a tour in Afghanistan and we decided to try for baby number 3. I got pregnant almost right away. Things seemed fine.  I had totally different pregnancy symptoms as I had with my other two pregnancies.  The baby was measuring okay at the 8 week appointment/ultrasound.  I, like all pregnant women I’m sure, looked forward to that 12 week “safety” even though I really didn’t comprehend why.  But a couple of days before I reached the “safety” of the 12th week, I started feeling this uncomfortable pressure in what I thought was my kidney area. When I wiped after I urinated, I did see pink on the toilet paper, but everyone told me that it was probably just a UTI and to not worry about it.

To make a long story short, I had finally conceived after 2 years of trying and was so happy, but it sadly ended in miscarriage faster than I ever imagined. I literally found out I was pregnant and lost the baby a week later. It was devastating for me . Thankfully, my husband was by my side the whole time and was very supportive. After that, we gave TTC a little break as I could not handle it emotionally. After a few months, we decided to go ahead and keep trying and two more years later, nothing still. I was starting to get discouraged and bummed out. Also my cycles started to become a little off and I would skip a month here and there, or sometimes two. Well, in September we really put all effort into this baby-making thing and we tried every day. I was drinking some herbal teas to enhance fertility and really just trying to not have any stress.

My name is Bonnie. I am 30 years old, married to my loving husband since 2010 and this year (2013) [at time of submission] I was supposed to become a mommy. Her name was Delilah Sage and she was born full tern at 40 weeks and 4 days. She was a beautiful little girl, 6 pounds and 6 ounces and she was perfect. She had my nose and big eyes like her daddy. Her upper lip was like hers dad’s while her lower lip was like mine. She had my long toes. I carried her for nine months and every single one of those days I fell in love with her more.
