About four and a half months ago [at time of writing] at 18 weeks I lost my son due to an infection called chorioamnionitis. I was told at one of my pre natal appointments I had the group b strep bacteria in my vagina, but they could not give me anything until I was in labor. About a month after I had my miscarriage, the doctor told me the infection is what caused my water to break early. The group b strep is what caused the chorioamnionitis. Finding out the physical cause of why I lost my son helped a little. The doctor described the probability of the infection as ‘bad luck’ and ‘ rare’. [Read more…]

Leigha

Mom to Reagan

September 1, 2013

Tempe, Arizona

My name is Leigha, and I am here to tell you Reagan’s story. I found out I was pregnant in June 2013. I was very scared, and didn’t know what to do. I knew one thing, I wanted this beautiful child. I struggled for months with light bleeding. ER visits galore. They found a large cyst on my one remaining ovary that was growing very rapidly, and gave the cyst a month to shrink. The doctor said if it doesn’t get smaller, surgery was my only option. A month passed by, and the cyst shrunk from 8 cm to 2.4 cm!! I was so relieved, and thanked God so much that I didn’t need surgery. Everything was fine I thought… but it wasn’t.

I was absolutely ecstatic and shocked beyond belief when I found out I was pregnant with Silas. I think it took me 6 pregnancy tests over the course of a weekend to really believe I was finally being blessed with a child at 32 years of age. I had tried to conceive naturally for almost two years and I think I had just given up hope that it was ever going to happen. Needless to say, I was very involved with my prenatal visits and constantly read up on everything I could be expecting and what I should do to ensure a healthy pregnancy.  I don’t think I ever prayed so much in my whole life! But as I got bigger, my pregnancy started to cause me concern. I had a lot of unexplained shooting pains when I would stand up or sneeze, and I sneeze a lot when I’m pregnant! The doctors always reassured me everything was normal and I got extra ultrasounds and examinations to ensure this. By the time Silas was born at 18 1/2 weeks, I think I already had 4 pictures of him proudly displayed around the house and near my bed! [Read more…]

Mom to Antton David and Rayland Joseph

Lost September 6, 2012

Burlington Junction, Missouri

We found out in July that we were expecting “momo” twins. This was quite a shock. I went to the ER because I thought I was starting to miscarry. They couldn’t find the heart beat and sent me down for an ultrasound. The tech found the heart beat immediately. Such a relief, but then she moved to get a better picture of our baby and found there were two and only one placenta and one sac. This is what they call monochromic/monoamnionic twins. We were so excited. At the time I was around 14 weeks. Our girls, ages 4, 6, 8 and 10, were happy as well. Our youngest said she wanted baby sisters because little boys are mean, but the other three wanted baby brothers because they just don’t get along with each other and I guess they thought that boys would be more fun or something. Mom to James Philip

Lost May 18, 2012

Lake Elsinore, California

I am a mother of 7 beautiful children, and to my husband and I that was a blessing. In 2007, I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis. After lots of tests, my doctors confirmed that my chances of having another child was 1 in a million. I was grateful for my precious seven and thought nothing of it at the time. I was going through very painful episodes monthly due to endo problems and talked about an ablation. My doctor said, “Let’s set it up.” I got sick and had to cancel the surgery. Thank God, because the next week I found out I was pregnant. I cannot tell you the mixed emotions I had hearing the doctor say, “You are pregnant.” I thought, “You must have made a mistake, I can’t get pregnant.” He looked at me and said, “I promise you are.” I cried so hard, so scared and confused. I thought this is a gift from God and I am blessed. When my husband and I went to our ultrasound, they could not find the baby, so they said, “We think that you might miscarry.” Devastated, we walked out in tears, but prayed for a miracle. We went back one week later, and sure enough, there he was, with a strong heartbeat. We both cried, thanking God. [Read more…]

Mom to Elliot Michael

Lost May 30, 2012 at 18 weeks’ gestation

Tarentum, Pennsylvania

On February 15th of this year, I thought my dreams were coming true. My boyfriend and I had been talking about trying to conceive our first child together and in the middle of the hated two week wait I decided to test early. Imagine my surprise when, 9 days post ovulation I have a big fat positive staring me in the face. I called my boyfriend into the bathroom and showed him the test. He rejoiced with me, though in a much calmer, manlier way, and then said to use the digital test I had on hand the next morning just to be sure. I agreed and woke up at 6 in the morning the next day so I could test before he went to work. Seeing the word “Pregnant” on the stick I was holding made it all the more real. I rushed out of the bathroom, shoving the test under my boyfriend’s nose, my mind racing with images of cribs and strollers, freshly painted nurseries and my daughter and stepson holding their brand new sibling. I couldn’t even fathom something going wrong. [Read more…]

Mom to Quinton Edward and Owen Scott

Born and passed April 27, 2012

Edinburg, Virginia

Wednesday April 25th, 2012 started out like any other day.  I woke up tired and sore from being pregnant.  We had just returned from our babymoon and that weekend we painted the twins’ nursery.  I was so happy.  I got through my work day picked up pizza for dinner and headed home.  My husband and I ate, and I went to the bathroom for one of my many pee breaks, except this time when I wiped there was blood.  I immediately began to panic.  I told my husband I was bleeding; I tried to call my Mom, no answer.  I became more frantic.  I called the doctor on call, but he was in surgery.  My mom called me back to tell me she was on her way. She arrived in seconds and we headed to the hospital.  That was the longest 30 minutes of my life…a thousand scenarios went through my head, but I tried everything to stay positive. [Read more…]

New Zealand

I had only been dating my boyfriend for 5 months when I discovered I was pregnant. It was a huge shock as I was only 17 and I had never really thought I wanted to be a mum; I was just happy being an aunty to my beautiful nieces. When I told Bryan I was pregnant he was soooo excited! He wanted the whole world to know he was going to be a daddy, but I made him promise we wouldn’t tell anyone until we were over 12 weeks and passed miscarriage stage. Of course, we had to tell our parents, though. I was terrified to tell my mum as I thought she was going to be so disappointed, but to my surprise she was thrilled to have another grandchild on the way. [Read more…]

Tania

Mom to twins Jackson and Isabella

Passed away at 18 weeks and 22 weeks

D&E December 20, 2010

York, Pennsylvania

We live in York, PA where we have one of the best NICUs around. We know this because of our experience with our son, Wyatt, who was born 5 years earlier at 27 weeks gestation, weighing 1 lb 9 oz and measuring 12 inches long. There was no explanation as to why he was born so prematurely, other than the blood flow through the cord was not adequate. Every other test on me, the placenta and the cord…nothing was found. We had a lengthy stay in the NICU, three and a half months, but were able to come home and today, five years later, have a healthy thriving boy, our miracle! [Read more…]

Laura

Mom to twins, a boy and a girl, lost at 18 weeks on March 30, 2006

Mila Louise, stillborn at 41 weeks on July 1, 2011

Minneapolis, Minnesota

In 2004, when I was 27, my husband and I began trying to conceive. After months of not having any sign of a menstrual cycle, we were referred to a reproductive endocrinologist. After many more months of brutally high doses of fertility drugs we finally got pregnant through intrauterine insemination. We were thrilled, however terrified at the same time because over stimulation of my ovaries caused me to become pregnant with quadruplets. At the suggestion of our perinatal doctor, we reduced the pregnancy to twins at 12 weeks. At 14 weeks and then again at 16 weeks my water broke. It was a gushing of fluid, but I thought I had incontinence and never considered that it could be amniotic fluid. On March 27, 2006, at 18 weeks, we went in for our level II ultrasound and found that neither baby had any amniotic fluid. Our baby boy did not have a heartbeat and our baby girl was alive but struggling with no amniotic fluid remaining. I had a D&E and began the journey to become parents once again. I was devastated, angry, and afraid, but we would not stop until we had our baby. [Read more…]

After our first daughter was born, my husband and I were told we had passed along genetic birth defects. The chance of passing along similar birth defects was a 25% chance. Mom to Cohan and Gavin

June 11th, 2011

Wilmington, North Carolina

March 9, 2011 was one of the happiest days of my life.  After eight months of being off of the pill, I had a positive pregnancy test.  Later I found out I was exactly five weeks on that day.  This was the first pregnancy for my husband and I.  We were not really trying, but we were not preventing… we were just going with the flow. We were so excited to begin this new chapter in our lives.  I consulted my OBGYN the following week to confirm my pregnancy and schedule my first appointment.  We couldn’t wait.  At ten weeks we went for our first visit and ultrasound.  To everyone’s surprise, we saw not one, but two little peanuts on the screen.  We couldn’t believe it, and neither could our family.  We were totally beside ourselves with joy.  Two tiny miracles, on our first pregnancy, and without fertility help. Miscarried June 23rd, 2011 and June 24th, 2011

Washington/Prosperity, Pennsylvania

Where to start? Well, my husband (Scott) and I tried for 3 years to conceive on our own. Finally, we went and saw a fertility specialist. Long story short we conceived on our 1st try! We both were very excited. My fertility Dr. told me with what my blood count was at he was thinking it was multiples. We ended up conceiving twins. We both were very excited;  matter of fact our whole family was excited. I was doing great, feeling great and all of the ultrasounds were great. We had an ultrasound on June 22nd, 2011 (I was 18 weeks 1 day). Both babies were very active and moving around a lot. [Read more…]

Ya know that feeling? The one you get when you know things aren’t gonna turn out like you planned. The knot in your stomach, the lump in your throat, sweaty palms…that feeling?
