I was a little hesitant to begin having children. I knew I wanted them, and, though my husband and I dated for seven years and were married for three when we finally decided to start trying, I was incredibly nervous about the whole process. (In hindsight I can’t help but wonder if a part of me subconsciously knew about the pain in my future.) I was a teacher and had a self-mandated “baby window” so my baby would be born during summer break, and, much to my amazement and delight, everything went as planned.

Samuel was our “Bonus Baby” or so we called him.  The news of our pregnancy was a surprise.  Our kids were 9 and 11 when we found out we were expecting.  We had always wanted a third child but so much time had passed we didn’t think it would happened.  We so excited to learn that we would be adding a new member of the family.  My children helped with names and dreamt of the future they would have with their new brother or sister.  The day we learned that our Bonus Baby was a boy, we immediately went shopping and bought the most adorable baby outfits.  My son, who is a baseball fanatic, picked out a special baseball rattle for his brother.  The two of them also agreed on a stuffed Dumbo for Samuel that would hold a special place in his nursery.

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014, I was driving to my regular OB check-up. My 34 week check up. I enjoyed some extra time with my toddler son that morning, thinking how our time was limited since his sister would be here soon.  It had started to hit me how soon the baby would be here – with a planned c-section date of December 12, it was just over 5 weeks away.

Isaiah 14:24 “The LORD Almighty has sworn, Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will happen.”

This has been the verse of my life. I preach this verse to myself time and time again.

I was blessed to be pregnant with our third child after years of trying to conceive. From the moment I knew I was pregnant I knew I was having another beautiful girl. I started searching girl names and came across Eliannah, which means my God has answered me. It was so fitting and perfect since I had prayed for her, and The Lord answered my prayer. I felt such a strong bond with her from the very beginning. I have a very small frame and start showing early on in my pregnancies. I was seven weeks pregnant with a baby bump that I was so proud to show. I start feeling her move at 14 weeks. My children prayed for Eliannah every night. They prayed that God would keep her safe and healthy.

I married my college sweetheart on May 26, 2007 after dating for 4 years.  He was the love of my life.  Everything seemed to work out perfectly as we met in our first class as college freshmen and married 2 weeks after graduation.  Life was easy and going exactly according to plan.  We decided in 2009 that we wanted to have children.  I figured it would take 2 months, 3 tops.  And then we could share the joy with our families that year at Thanksgiving.  And then at Christmas.  His birthday party?  Maybe 4th of July?  Football tailgate reunions??  And on it went.  No pregnancy, month after month.

When I found out I was pregnant with our first child in January, I was already 14 weeks along. I didn’t know because when I first went for a pregnancy test, they found nothing, however they did see that I had some fibroids, one of which was as large as a woman who is 4 months pregnant. I was so happy as my older sister was also pregnant, and we were both due within a couple of weeks of each other. We were even more excited when we found out that my sister was having a boy and I was having a girl.

Wednesday, June 18th at 10:25pm we welcomed Elijah ‘Murphy’ Rhett.

Our day started like any other–husband had court, W and I got chores done around the house, and everyone was looking forward to seeing the baby and finding out the gender. However, our appointment didn’t go as expected. The doctor saw fluid on the baby’s tummy and skull, which we asked what that meant, and he went on to explain that there was no movement, no heartbeat.

“Sweetie… There’s no heartbeat,” my doctor almost whispered. I cannot stop going over these words in my head. My doctor wasn’t as sympathetic as he was shocked. Really, I had known for weeks. When I felt his little kicks stop at 21 weeks, I insisted on getting an ultrasound immediately. There was a “normal heartbeat..155,” a very serious-looking doctor in the practice had confirmed. Even with that assurance, I watched my baby lay still on the ultrasound screen and knew that the heartbeat meant nothing.

My whole life I had wanted a baby girl. But I wanted a boy first to be the big brother to look over his little sister. The first time I was pregnant, I was young (18) and very excited; it was planned. After being told me my baby looked perfect on ultrasound, and I got my first picture of him (I didn’t know the sex I just had a feeling), I miscarried that night at home.

In July of 2013, we found out we were having our second child.  We were simply over the moon because we had been hoping for a baby for a while.  Our first child was 5-years-old and had also been asking for a little brother or sister so he wouldn’t be so lonely anymore.

I replay every detail in my head of Aaron’s story over and over again. I lay in bed at night and relive it. I long and ache for my little one.

September 28, 2012 I was scheduled for a 25-week check-up. The doctor’s office was about 30 minutes away. Normally my husband would accompany me on these visits. That morning he was planning to, but we got into a fight. I told him that I would just go alone. Thankfully, though, we made up and he came with me. We left our oldest son with a babysitter, and we were on our way.

It all started June 17, 2008. I was about six months pregnant with twin boys. I noticed some bleeding which is of course a red flag in pregnancy. I immediately called my doctor who told me to come in so he could give me an examination. I raced over to the office upset and thinking the worst. He started by doing an ultrasound. I watched the screen intently and saw both little guys moving around. “Yes, they are ok,” I thought to myself.

It was a Saturday night, and everything was going as usual. My 3-year-old James, my 5-month-old Carter and I had spent the day playing together and sitting around outside. Both my kids went to bed at 8pm, so when 8 rolled around I put James to bed, and Carter did not seem tired, so I brought him in my room, and we watched some TV together.
