Everything was going well with my pregnancy, even though I was of advanced maternal age (i.e. old).  Four months into my pregnancy I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid).  I was sent to have a level 2 ultrasound, which I received weekly throughout my pregnancy.  I was lucky to spend up to an hour each week watching my baby grow inside me.  They looked him over head to toe and could only find that he was perfect in every way.  Usually with polyhydramnios the excess fluid can mean that the baby isn’t swallowing or peeing the amniotic fluid, which can be caused by a hole in the esophagus, kidney issues, etc.  They found none of that, so I never worried.  I thought everything was going to be fine and I was meant to have this little boy. What I didn’t know was that because of the excess fluid, cord accidents can happen.  Because of my size, I didn’t feel him move as often as a pregnancy without polyhydramnios.  I had my last level 2 ultrasound on Thursday, June 26th 2008 and as soon as I saw Ryan he had his palm up in the air facing me like he was saying “Hi”.  Again, everything was perfect.  I was 30 1/2 weeks and the only worry I had was making it full term. I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks on November 10, 2011. It was the most exciting day! I took 3 pregnancy tests just make sure I wasn’t imagining it. I surprised my husband when he got home by leaving the pregnancy tests on the bathroom counter. We were both so excited and already making plans for our future with this new chapter of our lives. In the past year I have been pregnant 5 times.  Each pregnancy has been different, unique in its own way.  Each has changed me and forced me to become a more accepting, understanding and patient person.  May 2, 2011 I found out I was pregnant for the first time.  It was unplanned but a welcomed surprise.  During this pregnancy I was naive – positive, hopeful and unaware of the possibility of loss.  We were thrilled to see the heartbeat and growing baby but weeks later the heartbeat stopped.  Closure for this pregnancy was the easiest of all because I got married 2 weeks later.  My pain was turned to joy and excitement…and so began our life of TTC – ovulation kits, lots of sex and hundreds of pregnancy tests. I am Amie. I am married to a wonderful man named Jeremy. We have two boys. Jeremy and I have been together for over 14 years. This is my first miscarriage. I am so sad and heartbroken. I know Jeremy is sad, too; I can see the hurt in his eyes as he tries not to show it. He is dealing with it in his own way. Christmas will be so hard. Ellie was due on December 8th. I can’t believe I will never hold her. I knew something wasn’t right a few weeks ago, but I tried to put it out of my mind. I have been waiting for this pregnancy and baby for so long that I tried like hell to ignore my instincts. When I started spotting on the Monday before, I knew I couldn’t ignore the signs anymore. As the bleeding progressed I started to become more scared. I call the OB nurse and she scheduled an ultrasound. I was 12 weeks along. Ellie had no heartbeat. Wednesday April 25th, 2012 started out like any other day.  I woke up tired and sore from being pregnant.  We had just returned from our babymoon and that weekend we painted the twins’ nursery.  I was so happy.  I got through my work day picked up pizza for dinner and headed home.  My husband and I ate, and I went to the bathroom for one of my many pee breaks, except this time when I wiped there was blood.  I immediately began to panic.  I told my husband I was bleeding; I tried to call my Mom, no answer.  I became more frantic.  I called the doctor on call, but he was in surgery.  My mom called me back to tell me she was on her way. She arrived in seconds and we headed to the hospital.  That was the longest 30 minutes of my life…a thousand scenarios went through my head, but I tried everything to stay positive. [Read more...]

I found out I was pregnant on November 9, 2011, after our first attempt at IVF. We found out we were expecting twins on November 28. After almost two years of trying to get pregnant, we were so excited to be expecting two babies. At the first ultrasound it was found that I had a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) next to Baby A, but it was small enough to not be much of a concern. The day after I was released from my fertility doctor, I was in the ER for heavy bleeding. But, an ultrasound showed both babies were doing great. The bleeding was from my SCH. We ended up at the ER again a month later for more bleeding, but again both babies were fine. At that time I was ordered to bed rest for three weeks. After about 3.5 weeks the bleeding quit, for the first time my entire pregnancy (at almost 17 weeks pregnant). [Read more...]
