All my life I was sure of one thing and that was someday I was going to be a mom.  I was never sure of what I wanted to “do” for a living but I KNEW I had to have kids.  I wanted a lot of kids.  When I was 18 I was diagnosed with PID and told that this would decrease my chances of being able to have a baby by 25% I cried and was sad but moved past that quickly as at 18 I wasn’t planning on kids anytime soon. I am the mother of 3 angels and my last angel died 2 weeks ago.  My story starts 9 years ago when I had my first son Ryan.  When we found out I was pregnant, I was 3 months along and told our family at a restaurant where we had lunch, everyone was ecstatic to hear our news.  I can recall that it was a good pregnancy, no problems and all was going well until 18th April (Good Friday) evening at 11:50pm when I suddenly felt the urge to go to the toilet, which I did and to my horror, saw a thick mucus discharge with blood,  my husband took  me to the Medi-clinic emergency room immediately, where they admitted me as they suspected I was in labour, they put me on the monitor and had a look at my cervix which was not fully dilated yet.  All was going okay during the night and when the OB/GYN came early Saturday morning, she discovered that I was 7 cm dilated and immediately put me on meds to prevent the cervix from dilating further.

I always thought that baby loss was something that happened to other people.  No one in my family had suffered any type of pregnancy loss, so why would I have anything to worry about?

When our son was about a year old, my husband and I decided to try for another baby.  We conceived our firstborn easily and our second pregnancy wasn’t much different.  I got pregnant within 4 months of trying.  I went in for a dating ultrasound and I knew something was wrong when the technician said to me, “Oh!  You’re very early.  Are you about 6 weeks?”  I was 8 weeks pregnant. Life can change in an instant, or in my family’s case, just under 24 hours.  I lost my second son Griffin on February 1st, 2011.  Griffin was born at 24 weeks and 2 days.

I am a worrier by nature, with my first son I worried about miscarriage, and then (ironically) I worried about premature birth and then after awhile I relaxed into pregnancy.  With my second I felt confident that I had done this before and could/would do it again.  I did however have a few feelings that something just wasn’t right, a mothers intuition perhaps.  I would think to myself that this pregnancy just wasn’t going to happen, and then I would shake my head and give myself a hard time for being so negative. This story begins on September 18, 2010 when I took a pregnancy test and it was positive! After the loss of our first pregnancy at 8 weeks, this was the healing we were looking for. We went to the doctor’s office just a couple weeks later (5 weeks pregnant) and saw our little grain of rice-sized baby on the ultrasound. The little heart was just beating away as strong as it could be. We went again for ultrasounds at 7 and 9 weeks. It all started out so effortless.  We got pregnant during the second month that we tried and my pregnancy was pretty easy.  I did not get sick and I did not have a lot of nausea.  I was more tired than I had been in my entire life, but aside from that, I was ok.  And super excited.  Right away, Gary suspected that we had a little girl on the way, but it took longer to convince me.  Ok, so it took an ultrasound to convince me!  But as much as I wanted a little superhero for my husband to play with (he loves comic books), once they said the words, “it’s a girl”, our lives changed.  Gary beamed from ear to ear and I think I almost immediately wondered if there was a minimum age for manis and pedis… [Read more...]
