My name is Kayla Bosley and my Husband Eric and I eric met in 2005. I don’t know what I would do without Eric and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to be his wife. From the time we met we knew that we wanted to have children. We got married in June of 2009 and we started trying right away to have children. Getting pregnant was not as easy as we envisioned it to be; so we started trying every fertility monitor that was available. When I still wasn’t pregnant in June of 2010 I went to the doctor. She started by giving me routine blood tests and tested many different levels. Fortunately all of my blood work came back fine in regards to getting pregnant and we just had to be patient. Unfortunately, the doctor found that my liver enzymes were 3 times higher than normal. After many tests and switching doctors multiple times in September of 2010; a CT scan revealed a tumor in my pancreas. The tumor was removed September 13, 2010 with the Whipple Procedure. The pathology report showed that my tumor was called a Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor…Cancer!!!
We were devastated to learn the news…this type of cancer is extremely rare (1 in a million) and at 22 its unheard of. Chemo and radiation do not cure this type of cancer; the only option for a cure was major suregery. Fortunately, the surgery removed all of the visible tumor. Since the cancer is slow growing I would just have to get scans every 6 months. March 3rd 2011 I had a scan that was stable!! We were thrilled; my oncologist said I was still not out of the woods so she wanted me to wait on pregnancy. This is because we had such a hard time getting pregnant before so it would be hard to plan a pregnancy around scans.
During the first week of April I just had a feeling that I was pregnant. I came home on my lunch break and took a pregnancy test….I was pregnant and baby’s due date would be 12/5/2011!! I called my husband home and we came up with a plan how we would tell our huge family. The following week our backyard was going to be featured on a DIY show where you get a backyard makeover. We thought that would be a perfect time since our families would be together. We didn’t even think twice about the pregnancy being too early. We just assumed that the reason I didn’t get pregnant to begin with was because my body was sick and now my body was healthy enough for baby. Our families were thrilled and everyone cried happy tears.
I called my doctor and had my first ultrasound scheduled for May 17th; I would be 11 weeks. At about 9 weeks I had some spotting that had me worried. I called the doctor and she had me come in for a ultrasound. During the ultrasound there was no heartbeat. The baby never developed; baby stopped growing at 4-6 weeks. We were devastated, we couldn’t get out of there fast enough to just cry and hold each other. The doctor told me since I had already started bleeding the miscarriage would happen naturally. A week later I went back to the doctor and she stated that the miscarriage was still incomplete. She gave me Cytotec and told me within 8 hours I would have the miscarriage. The medicine actually stopped my bleeding and I called my doctor the next morning and told her I couldn’t do this anymore and wanted the D & C. Knowing the medicine hadn’t work the D & C was the next option anyway. The next morning I had the D & C, which in the end was very easy and I had zero pain or side effects.
The next step for us is to wait… we will have to wait until September for my next scan. In the meantime we will pray that my scan is stable and that my doctor will give me the all clear for pregnancy. Hopefully after that we will have a baby arriving sometime in 2012. Being diagnosed with cancer and losing a baby all in 6 months has been the hardest thing I will ever have to go through; but I stay strong because I have so much to look forward to everyday and for the future.
